Help determining value of a 29-2

Its been approx 9 years since I have posted, But I figured you guys would be the best to help me determine the value of my Model 29-2. I haven't shot it in 2-3 years, I am thinking of selling it and putting it towards a M1 Garand, however, I have no idea what these go for, Gunbroker is all over the scale.

What I (think) I know

Model 29-2 circa 1981
pinned barrel
recessed cylinder
target hammer and trigger
Herrett's Cocobolo wood grips

No box/paperwork etc.

It does have some muzzle wear and some wear on one section of the cylinder, no idea what the deal is with the cylinder wear, just noticed it the other day moving it around the safe.

Some wear, non factory grips. I'd say about $800. Depending on what you want for a Garand you might be able to trade even. I had one a few years back I would have happily traded to you for the 29-2. If it were me I'd take it to a gun show (you have those in Fairbanks?) and try to make a trade to an individual who has a Garand; not a dealer, but one of the guys like us at a show trying to sell or buy a few things. That's where I got my Garand. . . .and where I traded it for something else too. Good luck.

On a side note, that "blueing wear" on the cylinder mouth edges may not be finish loss at all. It may be lead residue from firing. A bronze cleaning brush and a little solvent will tell you for sure.

Value? At least $800, probably more on GB with good photos. I too would feel comfortable with an even trade for a clean M1 Garand.

we usually have one around dividend time, October, but they gave them out early this year in July, so who knows.

I am only looking for a Field Grade Garand. I would like to get one as close to have seen combat as possible, but not sure if that calls for more $$ there's a lot of re stocked and very nice ones for the 1500-2500 range, which is more than id like to spend.

CMP shows some field grade ones for $650, so we will see.

I will also try the bronze brush and see if its finish wear

You're probably aware that the current $650 FG price on a Garand from the CMP includes shipping. Assuming you can scrape up the money why not order your Garand straight from the CMP? I've ordered many Garands, and other milsurp rifles, from the CMP since the mid/late '90s. Not really difficult at all to qualify for purchase, shipping directly to your door.

I sure wouldn't want to give up that 29 of yours. Heck, if we lived closer we could probably work out a Garand trade!

Around here (central Virginia) at this time, both Model 29-2 and an any shape Garand are scarce to non-existent for retail sales. Heck even 1903-A3's are better than $1k.

A decent Garand (Arsenal overhaul, mix-masters like most all Garand's) is $1100 to $1300 when seen around here, a Model 29-2 is at least $1000 to $1200 at retail (LGS, pawn shops, I-net sites). Transfer fees, taxes, back ground checks, add to the above. Shipping would be at least $75 to $100 (or more to Alaska).

Seems to me Garand's are easier to obtain simply because they are long guns and probably state-by-state restrictions are less than handguns.

My 29-2 (1980) and my Garand (IHC postage stamp, US Army Red River Army Depot 1966 overhaul) have both great shooter satisfaction and maybe about equal collector value.

I would think your 29 would be a very desirable gun in Alaska for hunting value due to 44 Magnum and a lot easier to carry in a kayak than an M1, so maybe a newspaper add, or bulletin board posting in local haunts might scare up an equal trade if someone had a Garand they were tired of toting around. Over the years I've acquired more than a few handguns, and long guns from newspaper adds....not everybody only sells "modern" via Internet.

I will let you guys know how I do, in either case. Not sure on the 29's popularity here. A lot fo guys tun Ruger Redhawk's here, as you can run the Buffalo Bore 340 gr +P+ stuff in them

Once you qualify with the CMP then rifles/carbines are shipped directly to your residence, no FFL involved. If you review the qualifying steps on the CMP website you'll see how simple it is. As for being a member of an affiliated club you can pick the Garand Collectors Association (GCA). For the practical/shooting requirement there are multiple options as well. Law enforcement or military history, concealed carry permit, and you fulfill that as well. But obviously many folks fulfill both the affiliated organization and shooting requirement by being a member of a local gun club. Yeah, after I sent my last comment I figured that the free shipping probably didn't extend to Alaska.

Yeah my assumption was $800-1000, Just wanted to make sure first, gun stuff here always seems to go for more than I think it should, and i usually ask for a higher price, as people always want to offer less/negotiate regardless of what you ask.

I also figured not having the box would effect value, but It didn't come with a box, and I'm not much at having collector stuff, i like to use what i have, expensive stuff just sitting there bugs me, which is why I'm looking at getting rid of it, all i do is move it around the safe

Dont know when I`ve seen an older Model 29 for sale in any LGS here in Pa.Cabelas is the only place nearby that would have a remote chance of even having one,and they would list it about $ 1500. They recently had a 27-2,with rubber grips,sell for $1300.Online I wouldnt be a bit surprised to see it at $1800.Private sale,of course much less. Crazy prices , I know

If you are active/retired military or LEO, the approved organization is not required, just provide proof of such.

I believe the ship by FedEx, referred to as BWT (big white truck). It has been 20 years since I got my last one from them.

EricR is correct, LEO or military for marksmanship. I belong to GCA. The annual fee is minimal and you get a great magazine with a wealth of information for the Garand.

Good point! And I did not realize that. But it explains how my late Dad (US Navy Officer in Pacific WWII) was able to purchase without an org membership. I stand corrected.

EricR, the program your dad participated in was the DCM, you had to be a member of the NRA to participate. My dad got his thru the DCM program. In 1996 the program changed to CMP with current requirements. Don't know if military or LEO was required under the DCM program. I do remember my dad could only get one rifle, one per lifetime.
