Model 48 Classic

Just got my new .22 Mag. Model 48 Classic (model 48-7 is stamped on the gun).

I ordered it on a whim since I somehow ended up with about 10 boxes of .22 Mag ammo. I think I picked up that ammo a couple years ago when I owned one of those KelTec CMR30 rifles. Got rid of the CMR30, but now have a gun that I really enjoy shooting .22 Mag out of.

Went to the range right from the gun store. Love this gun. It is super accurate and functions just like my older K frame S&Ws.

The gun is so nice, you hardly notice the Hillary hole.

I think you can get a .22lr cylinder fitted is you were inclined too.

The 4" barrel was fairly rare in the original Model 48 and they command high prices. Good to see it available in the Classic series. S&W also makes a stainless 648 which is an 8-shot, 6" barrel with full underlug.

Have fun. I just got one of the 648s. Too much trouble for me to switch cylinders in a S&W Revolver as compared to say a Ruger, so I just shoot .22 LR in the guns that I have. Bore diameter is different too so I would be worried about the accuracy difference.

I may try one in the future but admit that I have 3 Ruger convertibles and a Hi-Standard Double-Nine in .22 mag as well as 4 different s&w long rifle revolvers and several other rimfire handguns...I must have a compulsive disorder as I often buy things like this on a whim...because I just want to handle it...lol! Well, I also always say that a person can have a worse hobby

I have seen a number of posts stating that all recent "Classic" revolvers are round butt.

I bought a model 21-4 that was a round butt (I did installed a set of Altamont conversion grips that modified the grip to a square butt configuration).

I then bought a model 29 Classic. I ordered a set of Pachmayr round butt grips without checking the gun and found out later (when I tried to install the Pachmayr grips) that the gun actually had a square butt frame.

I also assumed that this model 48, I just bought, had a round butt frame and was surprised to see that it is a square butt type.

The originals had issues with sticky extraction, how is the new one?

It seemed OK while trying it out with about 30 round. A couple of the cylinder chambers were not quite as smooth as the others but I really did not seem to have sticky extraction.

Nice gun, I didn't know S&W was making it in the 4 inch. Appears the front sight is much higher than the original 48 no dash; at least as compared to my 48 no dash. Wonder why, or maybe its just a bit of an illusion and really isn't much higher. Enjoy it.

I sure enjoy my Smith rimfires. I like my 648 for ground squirrels out to 100 yds.

I traded in a relatively expensive rifle today and ordered a M48 with a 6" barrel. Pretty slim pickins on handguns out there. I also picked up a M69 with a 4.25" barrel.

I really like the Classic line of S&W's. Happy to see them being offered. Do any of you know if sales of the Classics are good enough that they'll continue to be offered in the line-up?

I owned a 48 Classic for a short time. I ordered it new, and took it to the range only to be very disappointed in the action. It was super gritty, so I sold it, and got a 648-2. Much nicer action on the 648. The fit N finish were nice on the 48, and I was very impressed with that. Had it not had the dirty action, I probably would have kept it. I
