Questions about new-to-me 1911 DW CBOB in 10mm

Hi, I just shot this gun today for the first time. It's a real dandy for certain, but for a few vexing issues. I'm not new to the 1911, but new to the Commander-sized barrel and the 10mm cartridge so if there is someone on here that can help out, I'd be much obliged.

1) I can load 9 in the mag but if I drop the slide on a full mag, it will jam/FTF. If I load 8 or less it's fine. Is this a mag spring too tight or a recoil spring too weak?

2) The brass is ejected 12-15 feet away and has significant extractor marks on the rim. Internal extractor too stiff? Wrong profile?

3) From the bench I had no FTF but free handed it FTF's a lot unless a death grip used. Is this just limp-wristing this snappy cartridge or again an issue with recoil spring?

4) The Trijicon night sights are burned out. We can't carry in Canada so is there a better set of fixed or adjustable sights someone can recommend?

Thanks to any help here!

I had one, it was a fun gun to shoot. My Dan Wesson collection had to get trimmed down and is somewhat weak at the moment, but back to growing again.

1) Mine had the same problem. Recoil spring fixed it. I do not remember what spring rate I installed but it was one of a Wilson Combat recoil spring kit. I am thinking 24 lb but not 100% sure on that.

2) Recoil spring

3) Recoil spring and maybe some limp wristing 10mm commander size 1911.

4) Best to contact Dan Wesson directly so they can tell you which sight cuts were used on YOUR gun. Then you can source what ever sights you want. They may offer to do the work for you by sending them your slide.

Hope this helps you and congratulations on your Dan Wesson!

Thank you Abflyboy! A new recoil spring it shall be, and a few more Youtubes on Recoil management.

Take a look at Fusion Firearms for sights . I had some LPA sights from there put on my 4006TSW and 4566TSW . They have them for all sorts of models .

Thanks for the tip about Fusion Firearms, cpm.

They have a real nice low profile adjustable black rear U notch sight paired with a fiber optic front sight which I think would be a good choice for my purposes.

Bit of a bear to find commander length recoil springs for 10mm. From my research the stock spring is 22 lbs; I've ordered one of these plus a 24 lb. I'll install and report back here. Thanks again guys.

Had the extractor out today for a look see. Tension checked out ok so I just fine polished the necessary areas - just a touch up really as the stock profile was quite well done. Same for the ejector. This is the most carefully constructed and well fit 1911 that I've had the pleasure to work on. Thanks go out to Dan Wesson!

Take a look at EGW over size firing pin stops. Not beveled on the bottom thus requiring more leverage to cock the hammer, slowing and reducing recoil and throwing the brass far.
I have both a DW government model and a CCO model in 10mm. The full length guide rods and FPSs were the first things to go.

That was 20 years ago and they both still function perfectly.

Hi Iggy,

So a non rounded stop would give more friction on the hammer base as the slide slams into the hammer on its way back? I may be confused here in this assumption.

Come on "Iggy", I can't figure why you've never posted a picture of this special one.

I understand a DW isn't really a S&W, (or a Colt,) and should go in the all other forum, but you need to share more of your experiences here including your "stories." Thanks for the link you sent me. I read everything.

I'm glad to have helped and met you, but I am more glad I saved this picture. I redacted your last name of course.

Thank you for all your input and service to this country.

Jim

Iggy is correct, a flat bottom firing pin stop provides less leverage as it cocks the hammer. This will delay unlocking of the breech and is actually the way the original 1911 was designed. The round bottom firing pin stop was introduced because of complaints from the U.S. Army, if I recall correctly, it was cavalry troops, that the slide was too difficult to rack as army protocol called for the 1911 to be carried in condition 3 (loaded magazine, empty chamber, hammer down). The flat bottom firing pin stop works best with a stock, 23 pound main spring, but heavier main springs will provide even slower unlocking for full power 10mm ammo without resorting to recoil spring rates over 20 pounds.
