What are the best motion picture scores?

You and bigmtnman got my two all time favorites. I cant get enough of those two movies. They are my go to during a snow storm movies since I'm home bound for hours during a storm.
My runner up after my favorites already mentioned would be the Master and Commander soundtrack.

I don't know if it's the best, and my choice will probably get blasted by the connoisseurs here, but my favorite, and the first one that came to mind, is Danny Elfman's Batman score. I believe it's also the only score CD I've bought that was separate from the soundtrack album. In general, I like Danny Elfman's scores.

Others definitely come to mind, but there is just something about the way the music enhances this movie that sets it apart.

My answer is a bit more open. A lot of the best scores out there are the "space" movie music. You know like the Star Trek series, Star wars ETC!.

American Graffiti. I've had it on LP, 8 track, cassette, CD, and wore it out each time. Now I have it on I Tunes. The BEST music from the BEST time in my life, and Wolfman Jack to narrate it.

Agree. "Dances With Wolves" is an absolutely wonderful soundtrack.
Let me add "2001: A Space Odyssey". Modern and traditional classical music synchronized to spectacular (non-CGI) visuals. I saw it when it first came out in a large theater set up to handle the 70mm film and 6-track sound. A truly stunning experience.
On TV, the theme from "Dallas" has always been a favorite of mine. The score seems embedded in my memory.

I'll go with the first one that popped into my head..... "Dr. Zhivago" Score by Maurice Jarre. How can you go wrong with a balalaika backed by full orchestra
