Dump the full barrel underlug.

The problem with most current models with half lugs is they use the
butt-ugly two piece barrels, while the full lug barrels are still one piece.

The "too many nice" guns I was talking about are pre-2 piece barrel, pre-lock, pre-MIM, pre-1982. You might have to look a bit harder to find one the way you want it, but it's worth the search.

Yeah, it's called the Mountain Gun.

But they haven't offered a mountain gun in years...........But I'm with the OP full lugs add useless weight and UGLY UP the gun..........WHY put a FL on a .22 like the 617 or the .38 mdl 60?...............Musta hired the old python guy from colt.

I think Smith went with the full underlug to compete with the Colt Python’s looks and simultaneously reduce manufacturing costs.

Smith was successful in cost reduction, but missed the aesthetic improvement achieved by Colt.

Smith’s full underlug adds weight and poor balance that does nothing to improve shooting characteristics.

I would like a full lug on the current 63 otherwise remove the shroud like the older models. The 617 and 648 look horrible with the full lug

HOW does adding steel that takes more machining reduce cost?

The problem with most current models isn't the underlug, it's the lock, which is 10x uglier.

That’s a big 10-4, good buddy! :)

Here’s a sampling of my full lug beauties

If Smith & Wesson would have made a 686 or 681 with a half lug barrel, I would have been all over them. I still do not own a 681, and didn't buy my first 686 until last year.

I really like the idea of a 681 with a half lug barrel.

Do you guys like the angled lug? Would that be an ok compromise?
