My Dad was a shooter and hunter when he was young. Then he joined the Navy and went off on a sabbatical in the south Pacific. He was a gunner's mate, but his 2nd duty was as a sailmaker. In other words, he sewed bags and stitched up his fallen comrades before they were buried in the deep blue.
He was very adamant about gun safety. I guess if you had seen your buddy take one between the eyes it might change you. As it turned out, 3 of his best high school buddies never came home.
If Dad had met any of you yahoos on this thread, he would have banned you from ever owning a firearm and then slapped you aside the head. I'm glad I never met yous guys when I was a youngin. If I had been that careless in my youth, I surely wouldn't admit it on a public forum.

Walking down the street with "Wolfie" when we were about 10 (1966?) and he dug a .22LR out of his pocket and whipped it at the sidewalk. CRACK!

Tie a piece of pipe to a tree or fence post and put a shotgun shell in it and place a BB gun against the shell and pull the trigger. A piece of pipe is a true cylinder bore. Larry

On the serious side - some neighbor kids were playing with sparklers in the garage. One of them apparently stuck a lit one in a gas can. Some of the kids got killed. I just heard about it. I was either not born yet or I was a toddler when it happened. The garage pad was across the alley from our house.
Trivia: gasoline itself is not flammable. But the fumes will blow you sky high. When gasoline burns, it's the vapors/fumes that are burning, not the gas itself. Ever made a Polish Cannon? The fumes will send a tennis ball flying 300 feet when you stick a lit match into the bottom of it. Boom!

One kid's father reloaded , so he had primers,,
We would steal 10,, and line them up on a streetcar track (in Pittsburgh)
Well,,, THAT got everyone's attention,,, LOL!!
Also, we would drill a 1/8" hole in the primer pocket of a fired 30-06 shell.
After gluing 6" of fuse in the hole, we would fill the shell with black powder, then crimp the opening closed with a pair of pliers.
We would light the fuse, and toss them over a 20 foot embankment.
When we heard the loud noise,, we discussed WHERE that piece of brass case was flying,,
and we never did that again,, after shooting about 6 of them,,

CARBIDE,, available on Amazon for $25 for miners lanterns, will embarrass gasoline,,
The carbide gives off acetylene gas when wet,, WAY explosive,,
We made some crazy explosions with that stuff,,,
A one gallon paint can with lid, three carbide rocks, some spit, and a wooden match,,
probably 10X as loud as a shotgun,,

Our fathers all worked 6-7 days a week,, and mom was so busy,
there was no time to be a "helicopter mom" like today,,
We were left alone,, all of the kids,, this was the 1950's
It looked a LOT like Christmas Story,, we ALL lived like Ralphie, first we carried BB guns everywhere,
then we carried 22LR rifles,, no one said anything,,
AND, this was in Pittsburgh PA, not out in the country somewhere,,

Slingshot pegging 22LR rounds into a cement wall. We were at least smart enough to get behind some cover.
I am guilty of that, along with nail gun blanks out of my Dad’s nail pouch.
I used a carbide lamp on my hat when hunting at night. To light it used a flint like a cigarette lighter. The tank was on my belt. One of the guys I hunted with would cut off his flashlight and want me too cut off my light when listening too the dogs. Too relight I would hold my hand over the lamp, shake the tank and build up the gas and move my hand across the striker real fast. In the woods at night it was really loud. He decided he could hear with my light on. Larry

Another friend, just before a gasoline fire engulfed his house circa 1982, said: "I looked down on the floor, and there were little blue flames dancing on the concrete. Which I found odd, since there was no gasoline puddle on the floor."
That's because, again, it was gas fumes, not actual gas, that ignited. The floor was "dry" but the fumes were on the ground since gas fumes are heavier than air. The fumes came from an open bucket of gasoline used for cleaning car parts. The fumes traveled to a nearby water heater pilot light and *whoosh* that was all she wrote. Instant inferno. Luckily, nobody was hurt. They ran fast enough.

Back in the day (WAAAY back), we'd steal a handful of .22s from my friends brother. Then we'd go out in the street and smack them with a hammer.! Really cool, until my friend Mark got a little piece of brass in his cheek. We quit the practice then and there; even as youngsters realized Mark could have been blinded.
Was his name "MARK" before,, or after he was marked by the exploding brass,,, ??
