A proposed new Oregon law is now in the signature gathering stage and is expected to make the ballot on upcoming elections. I doubt it will pass but Portland is pretty out of touch with reality so it just might (they control about 60% of the vote). Under the new proposed law it would be unlawful for ranchers etc to harvest any animals for meat. This includes beef, chicken, pork, etc. They can only be raised for milk, rodeo's, and wool. Oregon has some pretty stiff anti-cruelty laws pertaining to animals. The new law if passed would lift any exemptions from ranchers and harvesting meat would be considered animal cruelty. Those proposing the new law say that ranchers can just switch to growing produce and it won't affect their livelihood. As I understand it this law may also apply to hunting and fishing although this was not made clear in the article I read. They claim they would be making Oregon into a sanctuary state for animals. Personally I am against being cruel to animals and actually feel kind of strongly about it but I think this goes too far. Like I said it probably won't pass but you never know.
