Smith & Wesson Moving HQ to Tennessee

Just a guess: Revolver production requires specific talents that are not as necessary in plastic wonders. The older workforce that has these talents is less willing to relocate.

Ivan

Someone in the gun industry told me something recently that contradicts this. In the age of CNC produced guns there is less need for skilled workers to hand-fit firearms.

Bashing those from other states seems to be a group sport here.

Interesting.

Not really "sport". More an honest appraisal of the negative impact of certain liberal groups who move from failed "progressive" states and tend to bring the same problems with them. Not realizing or accepting that it was those policies which they are fleeing yet bring with them that are the real problem.

Back in the 80's when I lived in Washington State, many Californians fled their expensive homes to find more reasonable housing in WA. Yet they paid much higher prices than the WA norm, driving up prices all over the state. They were lovingly referred to as "Californicators".

I find this move very appropriate in a personal way, as my direct ancestors from my Mom's side of the family, the Beanes, spawned the very first dynasty of gunmakers in Tennessee, circa 1775...Now a descendant of that family (namely me) has become a burgeoning accumulator of the product of another established gunmaking family dynasty, the Wesson brood who have come home to roost in Tennessee...

Karma happens, and the legend marches on...:D...Ben

It is not the Californians that cause a problem for the Southeast. It is the ones from the NE that move South and then try and change it to the way it ways where they moved from.

I live just 20 minutes from their new headquarters. I’ve been here nearly 70 years. It’s a beautiful area in the foothills of the smokies. Maryville where they’re locating is 15-20 minutes from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, one of the most beautiful areas in the eastern US.

For those that don’t know Much about us, the University of TN is based here with about 35,000 students on campus. Just a few minutes away are two major Department of Energy facilities with some of the top researchers in the world. The Y12 facility has the best machinists in the world. For those that don’t know about Y12, it’s where we produce several types of nuclear weapons. Also the bureau of standards moved part of its operation to the Y12 facility because of its extreme precision controls and machining.

We have a fantastic governor and conservative legislature. We’re possibly the most 2A friendly state in the US.

Very happy to see S&W coming. Hopefully they’ll move their manufacturing here.

Agreed...William Beane was one of those Eastern elitists who moved to what became Tennessee from Virginia to begin his gunmaking career due to the abundance of raw materials necessary for his trade...He arrived in the company of another ruffian of the era, a fellow named Daniel Boone...Boone later decided there were too many people in the neighborhood for him, and moved on to what became Kentucky where with fewer Beanes within earshot, life was a little quieter...

Four continuing generations of Beanes continued the tradition of building the finest rifles of the era on the same land William Beane claimed for his own...The rifles were highly prized and sought after for their repeatable accuracy...Another troublemaker named Crockett is thought to have carried at least two of his Beane rifles with him on a trip south, but lost them and his life in a skirmish inside an old mission near San Antonio, Texas...None of Crockett's rifles are known to exist today with provenance:(...Ben

That’s the thing about “honest appraisals.” They cut both ways.

There may even be appraisals of your location, “honest” or not; they’re likely better left outside.

Let’s not be in a hurry to follow the Balkans

That would be the northeasterners moving into TN as they have been in NC, SC and GA. No better.

From my NC property search, most of NC seems to be owned by people living in Florida and Georgia.

Unless I misread the press release, S&W will keep revolver production in Mass. No explanation was given for this statement. Could someone give us a reason for not moving this production?

The S&W exec noted that MA was going to restrict or ban some of the S&W products - I'm guessing "high capacity clip" *snort*spit* pistols and their AR line of rifles.
Revolvers will be OK - til the next wave hits for the looney toons.

Welcome down guys. Glad to have you.

As to the concern that new arrivals will try and change the nature of this area: At least half of my friends are "outsiders" moved here mostly from the northeast. So far, at least, they all are as politically conservative as the locals. And can't imagine changing a thing about the area. Let's hope it stays that way.
