First music you ever bought

In 1964 the Beatles lit a fire under me. Mom took me to the Dept Store and let me pick out my own 45's.

If I recall correctly I walked out with an arm load of records from The Beatles, Roy Orbison, The Kinks, The Animals, The Righteous Brothers, The Stones and Motown.

My path was clear and I had work ahead of me.

It's been a great ride.

I can't remember which 45 was my first, but it would have been in about '69 or '70. Got a stereo with a turntable big enough for albums for Christmas of '75. I took my Christmas money and went out and bought: Led Zeppelin I, II, III, IV, and Houses of the Holy, Black Sabbath/Black Sabbath, and JT Aqualung. I can't remember which I picked first, but it was probably Led Zep IV. I spent all the money I had and borrowed some from a friend whose mom had driven us to the mall. My dad was really mad that I spent so much and nearly kicked my butt for it. A couple of years later when I started driving, the first cassette I bought was The Outlaws debut album with Green Grass and High Tides on it.

When I bought my 45's I had a small record player in my room that was Lo-Fi. All mid range...no low end...no highs. I would jockey for time on the family stereo console. Mom had a collection of big Band, Lawrence Welk (world class guitarists/bassists) and Montovani while dad had a sizeable collection of hillbilly music.

The Big Band stuff grew on me and dad's Arthur Smith, Merle Travis and Chet Atkins records intrigued me to the point that I started playing along with them.

Variety truly is the spice of life.

The first record I ever bought, a 45rpm, for .69 cents, was "Venus" by "The Shocking Blue". I bought it in the record department of the local Woolworth's. The first record album that I can remember owning was the Beatles "Revolver". My aunt bought that for me. Am I a geezer yet? :)

Not even close. My first record I bought was "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys in the picture jacket. I still have it.
