Hey all, I just got some hogue tigerwood grips for my j frame. The figure is beautiful. However, the finish leaves a lot to be desired but expected at the price point. What is the finish and how do I remove it for a bit of sanding and refinish? Mineral spirits? Sanding? Thanks for any insight you guys might have!

The Hogue wood grips are two pieces of wood glued togather. I've a set of their grips I'll need to sand to remove some holster dings on the butt near the frame screw. I'l reluctant to go to my usual S&W stocks fix, which is an acetone soak. Other Hogue grips that I've had to sand lightly to get a perfect frame fit responded to just a burnishing with my thumb followed by some Howard's Wax.

When I bought grips direct from Mr Hogue he said there is no finish on his grips, just put a good wax on them from time to time. I don't know if that's still the same or not.

It's still a carry gun, so I didn't go nuts, but some fine sanding and tru oil really helped! Here's the before & after…
