More sabre-rattling talk from Russia today...

Question for the group: How seriously should we take this?

I think we should take it very seriously. My opinion is that Putin will not stop at anything until he gets what he wants. Partly because he's crazy and partly his ego. If it gets to the point that he's cornered he'll push the button and won't care.

With Ukraine's determination, they'll never give up. All we can hope for is an administration change in the Kremlin.

I hope OUR buttons are loaded and unlocked, and aimed at appropriate targets like launch sites.

I pray I'm not being pessimistic.

The response to Putin's threat from the White House, was to send to congress a thirty three billion dollar request for Ukraine aid, including twenty billion in military aide.

Edit: Germany's Bundestag also sent a response to Putin today, and petitioned by an overwhelming 6 to 1 margin, to send more "heavy" weapons to Ukraine.

Amazing that the Germans have approved such military aid. This is the same Germany that was on track to shut down all their nuclear power plants by the end of this year in the name of Green-ness so they could buy most of their energy from Russia. Wonder if that idea is still on the agenda? Maybe they suddenly remembered WWII.

I was in Europe visiting friends and sightseeing from March 31 until April 16, and spent a good bit of that time in Germany. They've definitely had an epiphany there.

To us, this war is an abstraction, something we see on the news. To Western Europeans, it's right in their backyard, and something they fear could engulf them quickly and easily. More than one person mentioned to me that Lviv in western Ukraine is only 925 kilometers -- about 575 miles -- from Berlin.

Russia's barbarism and brutality have also conjured up for the Germans their very worst memories of the end of World War II, when the Red Army laid waste to eastern Germany and slaughtered untold numbers of German civilians. The historic enmity between Russia and Germany has never really dissipated, and this war has renewed and strengthened that distrust all over again, and introduced a whole new generation of young Germans to the lives their parents and grandparents lived during the Cold War.

How ironic that one of Putin's chief complaints is the expansion of NATO...his actions over the past few months have made sure that alliance will be stronger and better-armed than ever.

Russia warns West: Don'''t test our patience [Video]

I saw the full video of Putin on France24 that we get OTA here in Vegas. I was taken aback by Putin's face. Is it just me or does he have a case of "Moon Face" going on, usually associated with prescribed treatment using steroids.

Of course, it could just be the aspect ratio of the original video got screwed up getting it to American TV, but....

We humans are a funny lot. The vast majority of us are decent, moral people, who would never dream of doing the things people like Putin do without a moment's hesitation. Consequently, when confronted with the cold, soul-less evil of a Putin, we want to ascribe his actions to a medical condition or mental illness.

Yeah, he certainly could have some medical issue going on. And he might have gone 'round the bend mentally, and crossed the line into bat-guano craziness. But then again, he's been eliminating his critics for years, and he's waged this sort of warfare before (just not so prominently). I think he's just an evil sociopath doing what comes naturally to him...

I have no clue why you interpreted my post as a defence of Putin. It was merely an observation, nothing more. If I'm right we can but hope it is an indication he is on the way out.

Oh, I didn't think you were defending him at all! I'm truly sorry my post gave you that impression.

I was merely pointing out that normal, rational, moral people see a guy like Putin and figure there has to be something wrong with him, because we could never understand his actions outside of that context. From the beginning of this whole Russian misadventure, I've seen people over and over again opine that Putin is sick, or mentally ill, or has some underlying issue that's causing him to act like this. I think he's just a sociopath doing what's normal for him...

I'd like nothing better than to think that Putin's time is limited, and that Satan is setting his place at hell's dinner table right now...
