The armored vehicles promised by Netherlands have begun to arrive in Ukraine. The YPR-765 is an upgraded design based on the US M113A1. The Dutch have retired the vehicles, and have 500 as surplus.

It's very obvious that so long as the West supplies Ukraine with weapons and vehicles, the Ukrainians will supply the heart and backbone needed to repel Putin's army.

I realize it's not realistic to wish for this, but I do hope and pray that Putin realizes he cannot ultimately win this thing, and ends it before much longer. So much blood has been shed on both sides, so much generational enmity sown, and so much damage done to the peace and stability of Europe...and all for nothing. What a terrible, tragic waste... :(

Beemerguy53,

I've read numerous times in
history books and present
that Russians always have
wanted to be part of Europe,
that is "the West."

And yet through their own
actions, their leaders, they are
always Europe's outcasts.

Hopefully, if peace comes so will
a time without dire retribution
against the Russians so that they
might feel they have a chance to
be part of "the West," welcome
economic partners.

After Finland's president and prime minister supported joining NATO this week, the Finnish ruling party Social Democrats today voted on joining NATO. They voted in favor of joining the alliance by a 53 to 5 margin.
More than "decisive" :) I had read that Russia was to stop exporting electricity as of today to Finland over the NATO issue, but according to a post on the Guardian, this will have little effect:
Russia will suspend electricity supplies to Finland from 1am on Saturday the supplier, RAO Nordic, said, amid rising tensions over Helsinki's bid to join Nato.

RAO Nordic, a subsidiary of the Russian state energy holding Inter RAO, said in a statement that it was "forced to suspend the electricity import", starting from 14 May.

RAO Nordic "is not able to make payments for the imported electricity from Russia", the statement said.

It added:
This situation is exceptional and happened for the first time in over 20 years of our trading history.
The Finnish grid company, Fingrid, said trade in electricity imported from Russia would be suspended "for the time being" due to difficulties in receiving payments for electricity sold on the market.

Fingrid added:
There is no threat to the adequacy of electricity in Finland.
It said that power from Russia accounted for some 10% of Finland's total power consumption, adding:
Missing imports can be replaced in the electricity market by importing more electricity from Sweden and partly also by domestic production.

Just read this article; According to Ukraines' senior spy chief, plans are already underway in Russia for a coup to oust Putin. He is very sick with advanced blood cancer and will most likely become increasingly irrational. Read it on Yahoo News. Just passing this along.

I'm not surprised. If true, the big question will be, "Will the cure be worse than the disease?" I vaguely remember a comment several hundred posts ago (!) that his most likely successors would be from his inner circle, which may not be, in Shakespeare's words, "a consummation devoutly to be wished." Nonetheless, any improvement would be welcome.

That senior Ukrainian spy chief
also admitted he has no absolute
evidence of Putin's illness but it is
his job to spread such doubt
about Russia's stability.
There have also been rumors about him having Parkinson's, but this Deutsche Welle article suggests that isn't so, whatever else might be ailing him. Not surprising that the Russians are remaining stumm on this. Roosevelt's paralysis was played down as much as possible, too.

In order for Russia to be welcomed into the community of civilized nations, it would have to abandon several key components of its national character, namely its wanton disregard for standards of international conduct, and its total lack of respect for human rights. I don't see that happening any time soon, especially not with Putin and his thugs in control.

There was a brief moment, back when Gorbachev was in charge, that it looked like Russia might change its tune, but basically, that country has the same mindset it had when I was a kid in 1960, and Nikita Khrushchev pulled this stunt at the United Nations...

Shoe Banging Incident (1960) - YouTube

I pity the guy who was his cobbler.

There seems to be some question as to whether this actually happened. (The YouTube vid might be two different people?)

From Wikipedia:

Khrushchev's granddaughter Nina L. Khrushcheva writes that, after years of embarrassed silence, her family explained their recollection of the event. According to Nina, Khrushchev was wearing new and tight shoes, so he took them off while sitting. He started pounding the table with his fist during his angry response, and his watch fell off. When he was picking it up, his discarded shoes caught his eye and he took the opportunity to pick one up and pound the desk with it. She also mentions that many versions of the incident have been in circulation, with various dates and occasions.

Nina's account is very similar to that of Khrushchev's long-time interpreter Viktor Sukhodrev, who sat with him during the event and reported that his boss pounded on his delegate-desk so hard that his watch stopped, which only infuriated him further and prompted the switch to the shoe.

Sergei Khrushchev (Nikita's son) stated that he could not find any photo or video evidence of the incident. Both NBC and CBC ran a search in their archives but were unable to find a tape of the event.

More sabre-rattling by the Russians...claiming they can nuke Britain in 200 seconds and Finland in 10 seconds...

I wonder what Western governments really make of this? Behind the scenes, where our intelligence people analyze and evaluate the public comments of Putin and his spokespeople, do they take these threats seriously, or do they attribute this to the Russians blowing off steam?

Personally, I can't imagine that Putin would be crazy enough to escalate this situation into nuclear warfare, but you never know... :(

Finland has officially announced their intent to join NATO. Sweden is expected to follow suit shortly.

About 35 years ago we were in northern Finland wilderness, and out of curiosity took a road that went to the Russian border. Miles before the border, our detour ended when we encountered a serious military roadblock that established a no-man's-land. These folks have spent generations prepping for this fight.

If I was Russia...................

with all this crazy talk about firing the "Big one"........

I would not want ANY missle of any type, taking off and have a track set that was towards any NATO or other country that also has "Major missles".

10 to 1 in this fight is not good odds.

Lots of howling from Moskva about attacking other countries. Seriously?? Puti has already got his butt thumped hard in Ukraine. If he goes to nukes, well, that's what MAD takes care of. UK has lots of warheads on missile subs, so does France. We do too. If he wants another conventional war in Finland or Sweden for example, he won't have near enough guys and gear left over for the next May 9th parade.

The extent of of the logistics and maintenance disaster which the Russian military apparently has been, and the corruption-driven inefficiency and ineffectiveness of the weapons industry, is becoming clearer by the day.

Super-capable fighter-bombers like the SU-34 get shot down because they have to expose themselves flying WW II-era ground support profiles. The reason? The Russian air force apparently doesn't have a sufficient supply of the advanced rockets and smart bombs that this aircraft would need for precision stand-off missions.

The Russian army loses a year's worth of tank production, from the only production facility left in Russia, every two weeks. Reportedly, production has stopped completely because the embargo cut off critical parts supplies.

Ukraine is littered with apparently undamaged Russian trucks, just with shredded tires, some still reading Made in USSR, or seized engines; nobody may have changed the oil or fired up the engine in the last few decades.

We can assume that "the world's largest nuclear arsenal" is in no better shape. On one level that's unsettling, but on another it means that Putin has no assurance that anything will happen if he gives a launch order. Maybe just an embarrassing nuclear fart that kills Russians.

We, on the other hand, have eyes on every Russian silo, track every mobile launcher, shadow every Russian boomer sub. We are very good at this, the Russians not at all. They will lose a nuclear conflict.

Putin knows he is finished if he takes this step. I'm hoping pure self-preservation may keep him from considering it, and if not, non-suicidal Russian military leaders may step in.
