In New Jersey our strict gun laws have eliminated all violent crime in the Garden State -- NOT

One of the gun laws that we are so fortunate to have is that each purchase of a handgun requires its very own Permit to Purchase. Here is The Bad, The Less Bad and The Ugly of New Jersey Permits to Purchase a Handgun:

The Bad

Each handgun purchase requires a separate Permit to Purchase

Even after you get the Permit to Purchase you still need to go through a NICS check

A NICS check requires two trips to the FFL. The first trip to fill out the NICS paperwork and a second trip to pick up the gun after the New Jersey NICS process clears.

Permits to Purchase a Handgun expire after 90 days and you have top wait 30 days between handgun purchases

Permit to Purchase a Handgun requires your fingerprints

Permit to Purchase a Handgun requires two references who are not family members

Permit to Purchase a Handgun requires you to sign away access to your mental health records

Permit to Purchase a Handgun requires payment of a fee

The Less Bad

The application process is automated online, avoiding two trips to the local police station one to apply for and one to pick up your permits.

You can apply for 4 permits at a time.

The 90 Permit expiration automatically extends 90 days after expiration. Before you had to make another two trips to the police station: one to apply for the extension and one to pick it up.

The fee to apply for up to four permits is about $20 plus $2 for each permit.

The two references are handled online.

The permits are "Shall Issue" not "May Issue"

Permits now get approved in 2-3 weeks instead of 3-6 months. For those of us who used to wait 3-6 months this is a big plus.

After you get electronic fingerprinted once you do not need get fingerprinted again for future Permits to Purchase a Handgun -- They used to expire after 5 years.

The State no longer informs your immediate supervisor at work that you are applying for a Permit to Purchase a Handgun.

You no longer have to sign a paper letting the state view any and all of your records.

The Ugly

If you care about what is in this post you most likely live in New Jersey

Shall issue? Interesting. I’m guessing for retired LE only?

Oh, everyone is now Shall Issue, but no one carries except popo??

Shall Issue to purchase -- No Issue to carry unless retired LE or serious political connections

As I recall you also have to have a permit to purchase and possess an:

Airgun - BB Gun - Pellet Gun

Long guns require a one time identification card after which all that is required is a NICS check for each long gun purchase.

In OK you just need a drivers license and cash or credit card. Fill out the form and then wait 4 or 5 minutes for the form to be approved.

I’m not going to cite my states’ requirements, you don’t live here and probably don’t care. I will say that about everything you stated in the “less bad” category are BAD! The worse part is that they have you all thinking it’s “ not too bad”.
Some states need attitude adjustments.
Good luck in the future

In my version of real America, you wouldn't have to get a permit or fill out a form. You would just pick out what you want and pay for it.

Here is an interesting thought and some facts related to that.

I started school at 6 in 1957 and finished HS in 1969.

During that 12 years there were 36 school shooting deaths.

That includes 17 at once by Whitman at the University of Texas

It does NOT include the actual shooters nor should it.

Sales of the Colt AR-15 rifle to civilians began on Jan 2. 1965

They had sold a total of 14,653 to civilians by 1969

Except for the last year of that period and the 1968 GCA anyone could purchase any gun they wanted except full autos, including the AR15, without any background checks, at stores, delivered to their home by the US mail though magazines, catalog or paper ads. That included convicted felons.

And some people believe that lax gun laws are the reason for school shootings and that restrictions on sales will fix it.

NJ sounds very similar to Hawaii. A serious PITA when I spent my summers there on home leave.

I'd have my purchases waiting for me at my LGS when I hit town, and apply for permits at the Honolulu PD as soon as I arrived. Would have to wait two weeks for the paperwork to clear and take my guns home.

After I left Hawaii, friends told me that the state newly instituted a requirement requiring a doctor to sign off on your mental state prior to issuing a permit.

Oregon's pretty smooth.
