In New Jersey our strict gun laws have eliminated all violent crime in the Garden State -- NOT
One of the gun laws that we are so fortunate to have is that each purchase of a handgun requires its very own Permit to Purchase. Here is The Bad, The Less Bad and The Ugly of New Jersey Permits to Purchase a Handgun:
The Bad
Each handgun purchase requires a separate Permit to Purchase
Even after you get the Permit to Purchase you still need to go through a NICS check
A NICS check requires two trips to the FFL. The first trip to fill out the NICS paperwork and a second trip to pick up the gun after the New Jersey NICS process clears.
Permits to Purchase a Handgun expire after 90 days and you have top wait 30 days between handgun purchases
Permit to Purchase a Handgun requires your fingerprints
Permit to Purchase a Handgun requires two references who are not family members
Permit to Purchase a Handgun requires you to sign away access to your mental health records
Permit to Purchase a Handgun requires payment of a fee
The Less Bad
The application process is automated online, avoiding two trips to the local police station one to apply for and one to pick up your permits.
You can apply for 4 permits at a time.
The 90 Permit expiration automatically extends 90 days after expiration. Before you had to make another two trips to the police station: one to apply for the extension and one to pick it up.
The fee to apply for up to four permits is about $20 plus $2 for each permit.
The two references are handled online.
The permits are "Shall Issue" not "May Issue"
Permits now get approved in 2-3 weeks instead of 3-6 months. For those of us who used to wait 3-6 months this is a big plus.
After you get electronic fingerprinted once you do not need get fingerprinted again for future Permits to Purchase a Handgun -- They used to expire after 5 years.
The State no longer informs your immediate supervisor at work that you are applying for a Permit to Purchase a Handgun.
You no longer have to sign a paper letting the state view any and all of your records.
The Ugly
