The Russians have gone in

Having up to three Americans potentially captured on the battlefield is not a good thing either.
True. Our countrymen. But...

They chose their path. I respect them for it.

I do not want to see any USG negotiation for their release, though. USG recommendation was do not participate as soldier. The guys who went disregarded this. Again, they have my respect for making the individual decisions that they did.

But, I do not think it proper, or useful, for USG to negotiate — make concessions — for their release.

Pioneering Russian journalist sells Nobel Peace medal for Ukraine

Auctioning his golden medal would mean he shared in some way in the fate of refugees who had lost their mementoes and 'their past,' sats Dmitry Muratov

Reuters story here.
Russian journalist and Nobel Peace laureate Dmitry Muratov is auctioning his Nobel medal for Ukrainian refugees, distraught at the eradication of independent media in his country, where he says fewer and fewer people support Moscow’s military campaign.

...Muratov dedicated his prize to six Novaya Gazeta journalists murdered for their work, among them some of the highest-profile critics of President Vladimir Putin.

...he questioned research indicating that most Russians support the invasion....

But Muratov said those who believed change may occur in Russia as a result of a split in the elite were mistaken.

“The powers-that-be have never been so united, never been so monolithic. People in power have nowhere to go: not Europe, not America, they are not allowed anywhere else. They are here. They are here like the crew of a submarine with no escape. And of course, they are united around the president.”

He also questioned suggestions that Russians might turn against the authorities if their standard of living suffered from Western sanctions, saying they were more likely to evoke the ‘can-do’ spirit of those who survived the privations of World War Two.

“Russia has arrived at the point where Russian President Putin will remain in power for as long as he sees fit – as he sees, it for the good of Russia. Whether he will be president or some kind of monarch, I don’t know. But the tendency towards absolutism is absolutely obvious.”..

The first group of Ukrainians have now completed the training to operate the MLRS rocket artillery systems.

The first strike of USA donated Harpoon anti-ship missiles has sunk a supply ship heading to the captured Snake Island.

I like this comment:
It was not hit by a Ukrainian missile, it simply completed its "Special Spontaneous Disassembly Operation" and is now guarding the bottom of the Black Sea with its cargo. All went completely to plan Komrades.

So enough with all the BS......................

Are they gaining control of their country or is Russia still in "Control"
of most of the main city's and ports, to control, this country ?

Is all this "NATO" help going to turn it around, or is it money down the drain ?

Do we need to turn up the "Screws" on Russia to 110% ?

Back in the early days of the Russian invasion, a noted military analyst stated that he believed there were only two possible eventual outcomes. A complete Russian takeover of Ukraine or a nuclear war. I think he is correct.

Here. The Russians failed to take Kyiv or any of Western Ukraine but have mostly gained control in two eastern proviences (oblasts). These are about 12%-15% of Ukrainian territory.

Russia's costs are staggering in dead, destroyed equipment, and their economy. Here's the high estimate from the Ukrainians:

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has published a report on the losses of Russian invaders for the period from February 24 to June 20, 2022.

The total combat losses of the enemy were approximately:

personnel — about 33800 (+200) persons were liquidated;
tanks — 1477 (+9);
armored protected vehicles (IFV, APC etc.) — 3588 (+11);
artillery systems — 749 (+4);
MLRS — 238 (+3);
anti-aircraft warfare systems — 98 (+0);
aircraft — 216 (+0);
helicopters — 181 (+0);
UAV operational-tactical level — 601 (+3);
cruise missiles — 130 (+0);
warships / boats — 14 (+0);
vehicles and fuel tanks — 2527 (+4);
special equipment — 55 (+0).
It will be recalled that on June 17, several sources released other figures for the losses of the Russian army, Rosguard, and mercenaries of Russian private companies, which together amounted to 48,837 people.

UK estimates:

But Mr Bronk wrote: “Since the start of the invasion, Ukrainian forces have inflicted catastrophic losses on the Russian ground forces, with around 18,000 to 20,000 troops killed in action, around 60,000 total casualties and more than 4,350 vehicles confirmed destroyed or captured.”

He added: “As a result of these losses, Russia has struggled to achieve large scale successes during the second phase of the war.

“Consequently, the Donbas campaign has seen a steady lowering of Russia’s war aims.”

Good thing they kept those plants.

Ukraine war: Germany turns to coal as Russia throttles gas supplies

“Habeck has rejected that claim, saying the move was politically motivated and designed to unsettle the region and ramp up gas prices.“

What a genius he is ^^^^^^

Germany has shut down all but three of its nuke power plants, and originally planned to shutter those three by the end of 2022. I wonder if that is still the plan - I haven’t seen anything about it.

Just think what that $80 billion in armaments we left behind in the mountains could have done for Ukraine.

Might have turned it entirely.
In contrast to how we took out Iraq ... twice, Russia lacks the horsepower we have displayed in past conflicts, non the less they are taking territory. Had they had the abandoned arms of A-Stan at first strike, we might be talking about Ukraine retaking Crimea.
looking at the map above. it looks like they are consolidating the Donbas region to make it less vunerable before they push to odessa, cutting off the ports

For perspective, we lost 36,000 killed in 3 years in Korea; the Soviets lost 15,051 in 10 years in Afghanistan, their last real shooting war, with material losses of:

Material losses were as follows:

118 jet aircraft
333 helicopters
147 main battle tanks
1,314 IFV/APCs
433 artillery and mortars
1,138 radio sets and command vehicles
510 engineering vehicles
11,369 trucks and petrol tankers

I thought they might try taking control of coast. Really wish I am wrong, but this halfstepping by the West bothers me.

I am 40% Ukrainian, btw.

About the only possible salvation is their running a 1942 playbook. The coast is a convenient way to land heavy weapons, but not the only way on the modern battlefield. However, don't expect any Deus ex machina. A last hurrah of money laundering en masse seems to be all we can expect.
We live in interesting times.... Best we can do is avoid gaining the attention of those in authority

Muratov's Nobel Peace Prize sold for $103.5m

Story here

The Nobel Peace Prize auctioned off by Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov to raise money for Ukrainian child refugees sold Monday night for US$103.5 million, shattering the old record for a Nobel...

...Previously, the most ever paid for a Nobel Prize medal was $4.76 million in 2014, when James Watson, whose co-discovery of the structure of DNA earned him a Nobel Prize in 1962, sold his...

...It was Muratov’s idea to auction off his prize, having already announced he was donating the accompanying $500,000 cash award to charity.

Muratov has said the proceeds will go directly to UNICEF in its efforts to help children displaced by the war in Ukraine. Just minutes after bidding ended, UNICEF told the auction house it had already received the funds....
