I do not want to see any USG negotiation for their release, though. USG recommendation was do not participate as soldier. The guys who went disregarded this. Again, they have my respect for making the individual decisions that they did.
But, I do not think it proper, or useful, for USG to negotiate — make concessions — for their release.

Back in the early days of the Russian invasion, a noted military analyst stated that he believed there were only two possible eventual outcomes. A complete Russian takeover of Ukraine or a nuclear war. I think he is correct.
Here. The Russians failed to take Kyiv or any of Western Ukraine but have mostly gained control in two eastern proviences (oblasts). These are about 12%-15% of Ukrainian territory.
Here's a full-country view:
Russia's costs are staggering in dead, destroyed equipment, and their economy. Here's the high estimate from the Ukrainians:
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has published a report on the losses of Russian invaders for the period from February 24 to June 20, 2022.
The total combat losses of the enemy were approximately:
personnel — about 33800 (+200) persons were liquidated;
tanks — 1477 (+9);
armored protected vehicles (IFV, APC etc.) — 3588 (+11);
artillery systems — 749 (+4);
MLRS — 238 (+3);
anti-aircraft warfare systems — 98 (+0);
aircraft — 216 (+0);
helicopters — 181 (+0);
UAV operational-tactical level — 601 (+3);

Germany has shut down all but three of its nuke power plants, and originally planned to shutter those three by the end of 2022. I wonder if that is still the plan - I haven’t seen anything about it.

Might have turned it entirely.
In contrast to how we took out Iraq ... twice, Russia lacks the horsepower we have displayed in past conflicts, non the less they are taking territory. Had they had the abandoned arms of A-Stan at first strike, we might be talking about Ukraine retaking Crimea.
looking at the map above. it looks like they are consolidating the Donbas region to make it less vunerable before they push to odessa, cutting off the ports

About the only possible salvation is their running a 1942 playbook. The coast is a convenient way to land heavy weapons, but not the only way on the modern battlefield. However, don't expect any Deus ex machina. A last hurrah of money laundering en masse seems to be all we can expect.
