Model 25-5

Yes; 25-5 was introduced in 1978 in 4", 6" and 8 3/8". Later on a whole series of 45 Colt revolvers came to market.

My first 45 Long Colt Model 25 was a 4"

It was already 16 years old when I got my hands on it more than a quarter century ago. I liked it so much I picked up the 6" shortly thereafter

I have a 4" M25-5, in nickel. Since you're posting this in the gunsmithing area, are you planning to do a barrel swap on one?

Unlike the magnum cousins (.41 and .44), the .45 Colt is a mellow recoil, very pleasant to shoot, and the 4" has a nice balance.

I was thinking of a barrel swap until I saw the prices of barrels.
I have a six inch barreled Model 25-5 that POI is high dispite the rear sight being all the way down. I have tested lighter bullets with more power charge with negative results. Even different grips.

I have a 4" nickel plated 25-5. The only problem is oversized cylinder throats. Use soft bullets, .454 diameter, and it shoots fine.

I'm glad someone is happy with their 25-5; I was not. The cylinders were huge and I special ordered larger bullets to try and match the gun's cylinders and groove diameter; slugged bore and pin gauged each cylinder. I chased my tail for almost a year and never found anything that would make small groups. Even Powder Coating didn't help.

In the past, I was always able to get a revolver to shoot by going through many recipes until I found what matched the gun. The 25-5 kicked my azz. On my 8 3/8", I never found anything that would get me under 2.5" at 25 yards benchrested.

In a kind of moment of fate, the revolver was stolen; OUCH. But that did relieve me of my misery.

A .456" cast bullet will show an accuracy improvement in these early guns.

You could put a shorter sight blade into the sight assemble.

The last time I bought one of the kits with the blade, screw and nut . . . . it was about $12. Today they are going for $16-$18 depending on where you buy it

They change in less than 30 minutes

You just need to be careful of the detent and spring

I've not had an issue with the larger throats. I handload and use .453 JHP and plated RNFP bullets. I keep my MV around 850-900 fps. I hit center mass at 25 yards consistently, that's good enough for me.

The 4" 25-5 was quite popular with LEOs. The .45 Colt is a very effective man stopper.
I got my 4" 25-5 from a retired Sheriff's Deputy.
There was a Sergeant in our town's Police force that carried a 25-5 for many years until he was given a direct order to switch to the issue 9mm. Even then he keep the 25-5 in his patrol car just in case.

Instead. Of a barrel swap a taller front sight may be a good option.

As Weatherby says above, you need a higher front sight.

I would try a lower rear sight leaf first.

Did you call S&W for help?

Took my Model 25-5 to the local Gunsmith. He attempt to convince me that by raising the rear sight, this would cause the M25-5 to shoot lower !!
He finally agreed to try to find a shorter rear sight bladge.
