When you go to your gun safe, gun closet, cabinet or whatever, what is it that you always want to take with you on a range outing? What always "trips your trigger?"

I was looking through my "collection", and having been fortunate enough to marry a woman who doesn't say a word when I bring home a new toy, I was having a hard time narrowing it down to a few for a range trip. That's when I noticed that the first one that I picked up was the same one that I almost always take with me. It's the one that I judge all others by when it comes to joy of shooting.

Now, I don't have a collection numbering in the 100s, but I do have some beautiful Smith and Colt revolvers. Some still new in their boxes and some almost 150 years old. I have several pistols, from daily carry to home defense to all out competition race ready. My long guns run the same spread. Not trying to brag, just a little background.

So with all of my choices, what do I almost always take along? My well used, but still in fine condition, 3T model 18-3 K22 Combat Masterpiece. This particular one is one of four that I have, but was ordered with red ramp/white outline sights, and a smooth target trigger. My others are another -3 3T (still NIB), a -2 and an old 5 screw that is starting to show it's age. So why this particular one? We just get each other. It has the smoothest trigger of any Smith I've tried, and I just can't seem to miss with it. I have, at this moment, 15 .22 handguns (yes, I love .22s) and I love running them against this little model 18. A couple will even actually out shoot it just a little. But nothing feels as good as this little K22 to me.

So, what's your "go to?"

Edit. Figured I would add the obligatory picture. 😀

My model 14 is the one I gravitate to.Its the one that simply will not let me miss no matter how hard I might try and it's action is just oh so sweet.

For me, the old Mk IV Series 80 Officers ACP, complete with the dork scratch I put on it in my younger days when I decided to clean it after getting home after a few adult beverages. It was among the first pistols I bought for myself when I became an "adult" and could afford nicer things.

Picture has it in the old case I keep it in on a shelf in a safe, with decades of oil soaked into the foam so I know it won't rust.

I have other pistols these days, many with red dots, and more expensive and technically better 1911's, but I just like shooting this thing, and for some strange reason am more consistent with it than anything else. It still gets some attention for what it is at the range from those who know what they're seeing, or at home when I open things up when people ask about the collection.

My very homely but great shooting Model 28-2 is a constant companion on my range trips.

Long gun would be the Winchester M1 Garand I put together from a stripped receiver from the CMP. Handgun is tougher but probably my modified 4inch 19-4. Previous owner had a SB to RB conversion done and a target hammer installed. The stock trigger was also smoothed. Feels like it had some polishing of the fire control parts as well. Best trigger of any K-frame I have.

Long gun would be my Stevens 1917 Favorite.22. Hand gun would be my pre M&P with 5" tapered barrel, former deputy sheriff's duty gun. When Grandsons visit they always want to see the "Sheriff's Gun".
