A Thoughtful Article on Climate Change

Yep. I agree. Planet don't care if we survive or not. Planet will be here long after whatever we do to it, and long after the last cockroach croaks.

The planet can take whatever we or anything else throws at it. Until, a coupla billion years hence, it gets swallowed up by our sun's super nova. (I don't worry about that much. C'est la vie and all that.)

But, we do, I think, care for our own survival and quality of life upon the planet in the geologically brief period we remain upon it, so best to pay attention to threats is my counsel.

Gosh, I don't see how dumping a few billion tons of carbon at exponentially increasing rates into the atmosphere for a century or so could have effects on anything.

It truly is astonishing to see people denying that we humans bear any responsibility for what is happening to our planet. We are the only creatures on Earth that foul our nest and then deny we've done it.

Those left-wing wackos at NASA -- ;) -- have an entire website devoted to explaining climate change. For those who don't want to take the time to read it, here are the takeaways from the Evidence page on the site...

"While Earth's climate has changed throughout its history, the current warming is happening at a rate not seen in the past 10,000 years.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), "Since systematic scientific assessments began in the 1970s, the influence of human activity on the warming of the climate system has evolved from theory to established fact."

Scientific information taken from natural sources (such as ice cores, rocks, and tree rings) and from modern equipment (like satellites and instruments) all show the signs of a changing climate.

From global temperature rise to melting ice sheets, the evidence of a warming planet abounds."

They were talking about climate change when I was in grade school in the 60s. That would have been a good time to start looking at changing things.

Now the nut jobs want everything to fix everything overnight.

It's not nut jobs. Everybody wants an instant fix no matter what the issue may be.

Interesting read, Beemerguy. I had not realized the impact of that one, 1970s Newsweek article.

Subjects like this make me want to scream. People who have no scientific credentials whatsoever, some of whom don't even understand the difference between "climate" and "weather", ridicule the work of respected scientists with no ideological ax to grind, because they want to see this as a political issue.

I'm only a high school graduate, but I'm able to think logically (except when a fine old S&W revolver comes up for sale :) ). Billions of people are dumping pollutants into the atmosphere...how could that NOT have an effect on the planet?

Same folks here told us masks work. Even the CDC came to terms with misinformation.
But I'm sure the "science evolves crowd" has that covered.

Denier? That's infantile, just a slur, and doesn't work.;) :)

As the most read book of all times says, "the wisdom of man is foolishness in the eyes of THE ####". I'll go with that. ;)

Please don't stroke out, get you BP checked regularly.

I have an open mind, I'm willing to listen, and I'm open to being convinced that all the predictions of impending doom are correct...with a few conditions:

1 - The elites that propose and work to tax and regulate us back to the stone age to fight climate change and rising sea levels...stop buying ocean from real estate.
2 - The same people in #1 give up their private jets and first-class travel as they circle the globe to meet with other like-minded tyrants to talk about climate change.
3 - The same people in #1 give up their Escalades and drive the same sub compact death traps that they are trying to force the rest of us to drive.

All I know is that they've outlawed the 3 refrigerants that worked perfectly for years. Now, the new ones are being phased out. I don't worry about climate change affecting my grandkids as much as the world leaders messing things up. How's the logging business down in $outh America??

Just for a historical reference, way back in the late 1950's we watched a documentary at school that told us we were gonna run out of oil before the next century.

Now, that was before the North Sea, North Slope (Alaska/Canada) and probably a few more oil fields were discovered, but still.

It's hard to believe "respected scientists" when they've been wrong so many times. The handling of COVID comes to mind.
It's also hard to see the sincerity of those who are in power and believe in climate change as "an existential threat", who won't let Americans have an oil pipeline, but then sign off letting Russia build one, or who don't talk to the largest polluters on the planet about the urgency of this issue. When inconsistency like this is exposed, why the heck would anyone here expect this issue to be taken seriously when leadership isn't even taking it seriously?
It seems to me that this issue has been highjacked by some in politics to try to expand government and power over people. Whether it's true or not is now no longer the main issue; many in this country will resist a bigger, more intrusive government. It goes hand-in-hand with more gun control, or eliminating cows so we all become vegetarians.
So, the issue gets lost in politics, where the issue isn't really ever solved, but used as an agenda to gain, or retain, political power.

I didnt see that said here but perhaps some did. All I understood about masks was that they were one way to help prevent spreading the virus, along with social distancing. Having never been faced with a pandemic on this scale, everyone was scrambling to find the best way to protect ourselves and undoubtedly some mistakes were made. But at least we now have some hindsight and experience that should better guide us. We are still learning. And most of us have probably been exposed to it, either through vaccination (the easy way) or getting sick (the hard way, esp. for some) , so we are hopefully more resistant now as they work on dealing with the more subtle aspects of the darned thing rather than desperately trying to keep people out of hospital.

There is considerable panic on the "climate change" thing because what was, a few decades ago, something to worry about for the future, is hitting us where it hurts right now, to various degrees in parts of the country and across the world. How much of it is nature just doing her thing and how much we - the most enormously successful and invasive species ever - have exacerbated the situation, may be open to debate (like the "9 vs 45" argument :)) but we are certainly in deep doo-doo and have some very uncomfortable and expensive decisions to make.
