629-4 with 4" barrel. Are there very many out there?

I've decided I want one of these. I like the way they're made (I had a 629-4 5" Classic). I seldom see one for sale, leading me to think not many were made.

Also, what would I expect to pay for one in very good condition?

Thank for the advice.

I bought a 4" 629-4 here on the boards several years ago. It came with an undisclosed push-off issue. S&W fixed it free of charge.

I found a 4" 629-6 at an online store fairly recently. I just checked and there aren't any available from that store currently. I frequently check an online site which has multiple sellers to get an idea of what might be available and at what price but I haven't bought anything through the site.

I would speculate that the 4" barrel isn't as popular as the longer ones because while they make for a better carry gun, the longer-barreled guns are nicer to shoot. My shortest (and favorite) 629 barrel length is 5" - I think it's the best compromise between handiness and shooting comfort.

Love my 4" 629-4. One of my favorite shooters. Discovered timing was slow after buying it. My bad for missing this, but worked out well. S&W fixed it gratis, replacing the ejector. Awesome revolver-you won't be disappointed.

I don’t think they’re particularly more scarce than other dash iterations. If they end up in someone’s hands who appreciates Smiths, they notice it’s the last dash number to keep forged trigger and hammer, have a hammer nose or hammer mounted firing pin, and not have internal lock. These traits make the dash 4 more desirable than later later dashes. Plus they have the upgrades of the endurance package which I think started midway through dash 2 or dash 3.

I think that’s the reason you don’t see many of them for sale. I’ve had a few 4 inch dash 4s pass through my hands. For a 4 inch I’ve settled on a 21-4. I still have my 6” 629-4 for touching off full mag loads. Otherwise I mostly shoot specials.

Are you looking for the standard barrel, or the Classic style (full underlug)?

I don't think they made a 4 inch barrel Classic style in the 629-4. Could be wrong, but I have never seen one.

I totally agree about the 5" balance. And the dash 4 has all off the best.

The gun in the above post is exactly what I'm looking for. The 5" DX Ed posted is another I'd like to have later.

4" -3 and -4 variants are very hard to come by.

I would pick up any -5 you see also. Great guns, no lock. Pinned in front sight so can be replaced if damaged.

I would also pick up any mountain gun variant of the mentioned above revolvers.

Even more scarce are the 4" 29-5 and 29-6 versions.

Wel-l-l, I know nothing about numbers, but here's mine with 2&15/16” bbl. I paid $300 for it in '02. It had Pachmayr Presentation/Compac grips that I swapped for S&W Hogue grips. Still a beast to shoot with magnum ammo. Made 1994.
It was a back-up gun during some entertaining foreign duty shortly after I got it. I remember many offers to buy it, probably to enjoy the huge muzzle flash. One was from a Sgt 1st Class lady. She liked the muzzle flash and the, uh, full-body shake she got from it. We did, too.

gunsinternational.com has some 4" 629's listed for sale

You can search for the make and model very easily, on the front page click on the "Smith & Wesson Revolvers - Model 629" link, there are four listed on the first page of results

GI is just a listing site. I did buy a SW1911 through a GI seller a couple years ago, but other than him I don't know the sellers.

Check out Gun Broker. Item 958793237. 629-4 Mountain Gun. Can't get any better than that. Unless you are talking about my 625-6 Mountain Gun in 45 colt. Good luck in your search.
