Dogs are a gift from God.
Thanks for the post Chukar60, warms my heart.
Here’s my Brittany, Annie, my constant companion for 18 years. After she was about 12 we called her fat fanny Annie. This picture was about 1986.

For years I've tried to start a new dog every 5 years. Last fall my back was so bad I didn't know if I could even hunt this year. Surgery has helped to the point I'll be looking for a pup in the spring. Started with a Brittany and will have them as long as I can.
I once heard it said that dogs don't know how wonderful they are, they just wander around making the world a better place.
The pain of loosing Ziva last month really hasn't diminshed though it seems every day on my journeys I get to meet some great pups with their humans that are only too happy to say hi.
Cut my teeth quail hunting with my Father over our pointers. Wish I had pictures. We knew a farmer whose son knew my Father, and there were usually a few coveys to look for. Lucy was well sought after for breeding. Thanks for sharing. I can see her in my memories freeze up on the birds, lifting a paw. Love to see a working dog do his/her thing.
Wow, great story and you told it wonderfully! I had dogs all my adult life. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in 2016, and it being in remission for a few years now. 2017 was total hell as I spent 5 1/2 months either in the hospital or a rehabilitation center. Friends and family had to take care of my dogs. That was tough on both me and my dogs. I decided that after my two dogs passed, I wouldn't get another. It has been tough, but I don't want to put "my" dogs through that again. I had a cancer scare last year. You just never know.
I cherished the time I had with my dogs!! Whether it was dove hunting, duck hunting, hiking, or just retrieving tennis balls, it was fantastic. It is sad when they want to continue, but their bodies, and sometimes their minds won't allow it anymore! I am single, so my dogs were my family.
RIP - Stormy, Holly, Marley, and Callie. I will see you all at the bridge!

My family and I have had bird dogs as long as I can remember, until the
last 10 years when quail in this area have disappeared. One of my 1st memories was playing with dad's Lewellin setter pups. Dad, brother,
brother-in-law, nephew and myself all had bird dogs over the years.
Setters, pointers and Brittanies. My favorites were the Lewellins and
the Brittanies. A couple close ranging pointers were very good also.
Dad had a Brittany that we hunted until she was 14. The last year she
was good for about 15-20 minutes before she was was give out. But if
she couldn't go hunting she would whine and carry on until we gave in,
so, we started where we knew there birds and she was happy.
Dad gave a 12 year old pointer to a friend to train his pups. The family
took him and kept him in the house and he lived 2 more years.
I read once where the Britts were the favorite dog of peasants who
were poaching the kings game in England. What's not to like about
a dog like that?
