Barney Fife, The Andy Griffith Show?

If you watch the episode, Barney wore it around his neck with whistle appropriately attached . . .

The "state regs" listed what equipment Barney was to have, and the list included his "whistle and chain". Andy wrapped a length of log chain around his waist under his Sam Brown belt, calling it his whistle chain.

I remember one episode where Barney was going to work under cover. He loaded his bullet, put his gun in the six o'clock position of his waistband and blew out the seat of his pants.

"There once was a deputy called Fife, who carried a gun and a knife. The gun was all dusty, the knife was all rusty, 'cause he never caught a crook in his life."

From '75 to '79 I lived in the North Carolina Piedmont.

The name "Andy Griffith" was revered everywhere I went. They were sure proud of their native son.

PS: I still have a copy of "No Time for Sergeants".

Check him out in "A Face in the Crowd" too.

A pretty good Elia Kazan movie and his character is WAY different than Andy Taylor's that we've known for so long.

As I recall in a book on Barney Fife, When it was known that Andy Griffith was getting his own show Knotts contacted him and said he needed a deputy and Andy liked the idea. Andy was supposed to be the funny one and Knotts the straight man but he saw right away that they should switch and Knotts be the funny one. Here's a parody of the show where Andy and Barney have to deal with Hannibal Lector…

MAD TV. had some good skits. I enjoyed the show, and I'm not one for watching TV much.

Now, don't that just beat all?

Barney carried a Colt. Looks like an Official Police Model.

Barney had a total of eight negligent discharges during the run of The Andy Griffith Show. I think I would have been fired after the second one.
but remember. in early epidodes ,Barney said him and Andy was cousins ... you dont fire family

I remember it being an ID tag and chain Which gave them the chance to hid it under his shirt.

"As it turns out, Andy gave Barney a very heavy chain to use under his shirt for his dog tags - the chain with dog tags, uniform and shoes were the only things he was allowed to give Barney to wear at the weigh in, and the chain helped push him over the minimum weight. "
