Will I get kicked out for hacking this 3.5” M27?

It’s unfortunately pretty pitted in a couple of spots right above the grips on both sides.

Found a Model 28-2 like that a few years ago. Had it “round butted” and bead blast blued. Just an idea. That said, I would probably not grind the hammer, trigger, etc. Would swap parts if preferred.

A few mods wouldn't hurt. I would swap that barrel out for an 8 3/8" one, then cut it to 7 1/4 ", my favorite length. Line the barrel and chambers to .32 S&W Long, which is a great old target cartridge. Those sights are OK, but no good for low-light conditions so off they go and tap on a set of Sig-Sauer Siglight night sights. I like the grip angle of a 1911 Colt, so cut the old handle off and graft on the 1911 handle. I would put a hinged plate where the magazine went and store spare .32 rounds in the handle cavity.

Your sarcasm-fu is strong!

I recently gladly overpaid for a 3.5" M27 for a few reasons:
- It was local
- I always wanted a 3.5" N frame
- I had the money
- I make bad decisions

Anyway, it's a good shooter with serious finish issues. It came with the 3 T's, which I really don't care for, especially on a short barrel. I am thinking about trading the stocks for magnas and a Tgrip, and grinding down the hammer to a semi target profile, and the trigger to the "combat" width.
What do you guy think? Any special value to a 3.5" with 3T's?

There are parts guns available, what variant is this one?

Also, if you do decide to build the 27 to how you want it. Send it to a well known smith for a full build.

I've made many an irreversible modification to a number of firearms and NEVER regretted it. :)

Same with me. The factory supplies a basic canvas for me. Very rarely will it supply a perfect piece. Most need at least minor adjustments, some require major modifications to suit me.

Long before S&W introduced their Mountain Gun series, I built one using a Model 28-2 for the base. I have done a few others since then.

Life is too short not to have a custom gun.

Here’s my 5 screw I’ve shown a number of times.
When I bought it, someone else had their way with it.
Barrel had been cut to 3 1/2” and not correctly crowned, gun reblued, barrel and cylinder bluing didn’t match the frame.
Sooo - great candidate for a re-chamber/ re-bore.
It’s now a .44 Special and has been reblued.
BUT - it was definitely just a shooter so no heartburn having the work done.
So, as others have said here, “your monkey, your circus”. Do what pleases you.

JMHO (take that with a big spoonful of salt) ... Congratulations on finding a good shooter grade 3.5 inch Model 27. For most of us, such a gun will only be a dream. Next, as to grips ... Sell the target grips. Easy to find nice manga grips. Grip adapter is great idea. Now, as to TT/TH ... Sell these as a set. There are lots of folks who would gladly buy them. You will not have problems finding and buying a nice service hammer/trigger. Again, this is JMHO. Like all opinions, everyone has one. YMMV. Etc. Sincerely. bruce.

There is a model 28 hammer and trigger on ebay right now for $80. You would certainly recover that cost reselling your hammer and trigger. Then, you wont have to worry about annealing your existing hammer or trigger from grinding. If you want, I will swap you a set of N frame magnas for the hammer and trigger.

Your gun, do as you please.

This right here. Ditto!

I have to say I do not understand the "Magna Love" at all. If they weren't worth $$$ to keep with the gun when/if I sell it, I would sell them in a heartbeat. Ugly, way too small, wrong shape, IMHO. Larger target type grips go on all my N frame guns as soon as I can get a set. Mostly Altimonts or a pair of old factory ones I had from a previous gun I had sold, with the Magnas on it. I have average sized hands.

Any thoughts?

Just want to see what people on here thought about my two 28-2s. No I did not make these modifications. Bought this way payed 900 for the pair. Did I get ripped or did I do the ripping?

I agree that a target hammer and trigger would bother me on a 3.5” 27. Luckily none of mine have them. However, if the price was right, it wouldn’t stop me from snagging it. If it bothered me enough, I’d swap em out.

I see no modifications aside from the ill fitting grips. Can you post individual images and a description of the modifications?

Nice set of model 27s. I always thought the 3.5” and the 5” were the nicest looking configurations. I have 6” nickel.

Those diamond magnas look great.
