Bought myself a Spare 3913

I did notice that the one I just bought has the wide hood instead of the narrow one.

Anyone know the reason S&W swapped some of these 3rd gen from a narrow hood to a wider barrel hood? Also, my 4053 has wide hood and my 1013/4013 has a narrow one. 6904 has wide hood too.

Easier and consequently less expensive to mill the breech face with a straight, uniform cut up through the top of the slide than the extra work of cutting the rounded, shouldered breech face of the earlier narrow hood style.

I don't have a spare, but my 3913 was carried as a second weapon, then as a CCW after retirement. I've had mine somewhere between 10 and 15 years now. Just fine, reliable little pistols.

My friend says they are $75-$100
Imo they are more like $35-$40.

I've curiously kept a list of the varying hood sizes of my new-to-me 3rd Gens. Quit a range of sizes.

I don't think I have paid more than $15 for one yet. Have acquired quite a few over the last few years, finding them at pawn shops in their used mag bins. Crazy what they go for online. With the demand on 3rd Gen mags, save the 5906 15 round, any other 3rd Gen Mag I find, if it is good price, I scoop it up. Will make good trade fodder when needed.

I always ask to see their used mag box. Lots of them have them behind the counter or somewhere. I find a lot of gems in those places. Most of the time, they don't know what they have.
