Waffle House

Where does WH get those people that work there? There must be a nation wide training center somewhere.

I cannot hear the term "Waffle House" without thinking about that scene in the Cohen Bros. movie "The Ladykillers" with Tom Hanks. "He brought his b---- to the waffle house!" Critics didn't like it much but I thought it was hilarious, dark and one of their best.

We don't have any in this state that I am aware of...wish we did. We also don't have Sonic's, and for that I am eternally grateful.

My wife would agree with you on Sonic's. She's a Chick Fillet fan, although I am not impressed with Chick's boring chicken sandwich. I've been to Sonic's once for the milk shake, which was pretty dang good.

When WH started, The Company owned stores had black letters on a yellow sign. The franchise stores were yellow letters on a black sign. WH bought all the franchised stores back, as of 1998, there was only 1 franchised store left, In downtown Chattanooga, Tenn. I just had to eat there. It was at a major intersection of two controlled access streets, 3 of 4 corners had a WH on it!

I haven't eaten at a WH for a long time. I know that one shouldn't think about eating there until after 8am though. The food is fairly good too (at keast it was when I was eating there)

We have a Sonic. I ate at one in Texas once and don't see any reason to drive five minutes in my town to repeat the experience.

No WH though.

The food is pretty good, the staff is friendly, the prices reasonable. My wife doesn't like fast food.

They have a specific way that they train employees, including the specific lingo used. They even have menu flashcards for employees to learn the menu.

The food isn't bad, nor is the service. Not getting shot while at one is the bigger problem around here. It may be open all night, but you don't want to eat there all night.

About 14 years ago, my wife was out of town and I got and emergency maintenance call in the middle of the night. I was done about 0330 and stopped at a WH for an early breakfast, It was about 6 months old and in a very good neighborhood but being open 24/7, they had been robbed several times already. MY big scruffy butt walked in and they had never seen me before, they got nervous as I sat at the counter next to the cash register! Then I placed my order without being ask, using all their special terms for how to fix my hash browns. Everybody relaxed, I may not be their regular customer, but I was obviously a regular WH customer.

Very few places are safe at 3:00AM. My bedroom is, which is why I try to be there at 3:00AM.

Loved a Waffle House breakfast when on the road. Tried the IHOP in Beaumont TX, but Karen didn’t like it. From then on it was WH all the way.

Got Sonic shakes in Clarksdale MS too. Took the drive thru option and didn’t go inside. A meal in a cup.

Chick-Fil-A in Branson was a bit underwhelming for my taste, but Karen loves her chicken.

Have to admit our Kiwi drive through choices of McD, BK and KFC seem very limited in comparison to the U.S.

WH, don't they have "All you can eat fight night"?

We used to have fight night in Boston. The various groups of Youts would leave the clubs at 2:00AM when the bars closed.

They'd then head to the food joints that were open until 4:00AM. The Chinese restaurants used to serve "cold tea." That's if they waiter trusted you. Cold tea of course being beer.

One restaurant was tired of the Youts using the real silver ware for fights, so they replaced it with plastic ware.

One night a fight broke out and one of the Youts took a plastic knife and cut a few people. No one was seriously hurt except the Yout with the knife. The police gave him a pretty good walloping.

Until I retired I referred to that as "The Great Moon Villa Butter Knife Massacre."
