Submarine missing

they are reporting acoustic signs there is life in the sub, and they are vectoring in on the source. Good old banging with a wrench likely.

US Coast Guard confirms 'underwater noises' after memo leak
The US Coast Guard said about an hour ago a Canadian search aircraft had detected "underwater noises" in the search area.

Remotely operated vehicles were relocated "in an attempt to explore the origin of the noises" but have so far "yielded negative results".

The US Coast Guard's Northeast Command said on Twitter these relocated searches continue.

The discovery of noises were first reported by US media, about an hour before official confirmation.

CNN and Rolling Stone reported that an internal US Department of Homeland Security memo said a Canadian aircraft had picked up "banging noises" heard in 30-minute intervals on Tuesday.

"Banging was still heard" four hours after the inital pick-up, when additional sonar was deployed to the area, the memos said according to reports.

they are using P-3 Orions and P-8 Poseidon sub hunters with acoustic bouys fwiw. I have a friend who's father was on P-3s, and another friend who himself was on P-3s. They compared logbooks, and realized they both flew on the same airframe decades apart!

And what possible courses of action are available if this sub is actually located?

Here is interesting moral and physical situation they may be facing;

The submarine’s hull is intact so everyone is alive.

There is 96 hours of oxygen for a crew of five people at the beginning of the dive.

Contact is made with the submarine so the crew has hope of being rescued.

However while rescue is possible it will most likely take longer
than remaining air to bring the submarine to the surface.

Simple math is the fewer the people breathing the longer the oxygen will last past 96 hours.

So now we have the classic lifeboat at sea situation. Does the crew forgo all hope of rescue and die together as a group?

Or do they decide that at least some of them should live long enough to be rescued?

How do they chose who should die first?

The clock keeps ticking down so who dies next?

What is method of death? Suicide seems highly unlikely.

Who is going to carry out the execution?

Finally legally speaking is murder justified? Or can anyone even be charged with murder? Has any nation claimed that part of the ocean floor as their territory?

Is it legally murder if the deceased volunteered to die so the others could live? In some nations this course of action would be honorable and expected.

Sort of seems like a more modern version of the Donner Party (Charlie Foxtrot)

The anxiety created by such thoughts would likely accelerate the heartrates and breathing patterns of all within, resulting in an even faster depletion of remaining oxygen......Ben

I will be surprised if they find the vessel any time soon, and frankly I'd be surprised if the explorers have not already met their demise. No real way of knowing I suppose but there just seems to be too much Mother Nature working against them.

Some information this morning that sonobuoys have detected noises from the deep, but not yet confirmed as being signals from Titan. USCG is having a news conference today at 1 PM EDT.

Reports of banging noises at 30 min. intervals. The O2 is supposed to run out some time tomorrow. How could a rescue be done? Send down a ROV and hook a cable on to it and winch it up? Odds are not good.

If I was in there, people would be trying to hold their breath!

It would be smelling most bad.

It seems to me that if the com failed and that failure was due to an electrical/battery problem, the engines may also be nonfunctional as well as not be able to release ballast then they are free floating and totally at the mercy of the currents and could be anywhere in the Atlantic Ocean.

I read somewhere that one of the vessels involved has the capability to attach and tow the sub. If they find it on the surface, let's hope someone has the right size socket to get those bolts off. Or a long drill to go through the 7" thick Plexiglass porthole.

If I was the one tapping and didn't know Morse code, I think I'd be banging out "We all live in a yellow submarine"

It's hard to distinguish the difference between a dot and a dash when sending Morse code with a hammer. Carbon fiber would not ring like steel.

Rick
