K-38 Masterpiece with 5" barrel

So how would one tell the difference between an early, narrow rib masterpiece, and a combat version from a later date, and were there any other differences between the two? Guessing maybe the serial numbers, for the dom's would be the easiest way to determine which was which?

The tapered barrel on the early 5", or 6" K-38 Masterpiece is usually noticeable. 6-groove front and back straps. Fishhook hammer. Target hammer optional at some point. 5 screw frame. Matte finish.

By 1957 the "later" version of Combat Masterpiece had 10-groove front and back strap, a semi-target hammer, 4 screw frame, polished blue finish, and model numbers started soon after.

Not all changes happened at the same time though. The polished blue finish started around 1955. Then the semi-target hammer and the 10-groove backstrap, in some order.

If the box is matching, I would expect it to be an overrun gun. PDs usually issued the gun and threw away the box. Roy lettered my MSP as a Combat based upon the Baughman front sight, not the barrel contour.

I exchanged information with JP@AK and he was nice enough to research my serial number and concluded that my revolver was in the third shipment to the Missouri State Police.

Here is his PM that he sent me posted here with his permission:

"Hi Ed
