Model 29 bought for the stocks- update after Curtis worked his magic

Very early (1963) 29-2. with left hand thread. Don't have a -1 but it would be similar.

AHHH, now I see - it isn't just a groove separating the knurling from the smooth part of the rod - it is actually a "band" of smooth surface that is turned down to a smaller diameter than the rest of the smooth ejector rod shaft.
Do I have that right?
Excellent info to help ID the RH vs LH threading of the rod.

Yea, you got a great deal on a gun that will clean up. If you sell the Cokes, you now have a gun with no grips. That came with Cokes! How are you ahead. Leave the grips with the gun.

Yes. And it's my understanding, and I could be wrong, that there came a time when that band was eliminated. I suppose because all rods were LH for a while and there was no need to differentiate. Hopefully one of our resident experts can clear that point up.

The lack of the plain band was a tip off that raljr1's 29 was a no dash. At least that's how I saw it.

No worries....i rarely separate guns from grips, especially guns that had cokes on them.

Bought this one with cokes, and tried them on a couple others for show and put them right back...even though they surely did not ship with this second model 44 in the 20s

Fyi, I bought that 44 under similar circumstances back in 2016. Poor pictures, few bids. I paid a whopping $750 for it. I get lucky once in a while....

Call me next week, smith at the range has some “ killer” polish, gave me a tube and I’m buying several when he orders some more. Think its better than semichrome which Ive used for 30+ years.

Ok, I got it home and did quick polish on it. Pitting is mostly under the grips and is a little worse than I would have liked.

From a few feet away, she looks pretty good. The grips are not a great fit and look a bit dry. I wonder if they might not be original to the gun or if they got wet, and that caused the pitting. Judging from the recoil shield, it does not look to have beem shot much.

I may swap these cokes with the other set I have to see if they fit another gun any better.

Serial number is S207904. I am guessing that puts it in 1960 based on the ranges in the book. SCSW 4th edition puts the value in good condition at $1200 with a 50% premium for nickel and a 25% premium for the 4" barrel. So I'm thinking, even with the pitting that this is an $1800 piece today.

I'll send for a letter, but all in all, I am a happy camper with this very shootable short barrel 29.

A slightly finish-challenged nickle plated 4" 29-2 with Cokes for a grand?
You did just fine. I'd take that deal any day and twice on Sunday.
A little Mother's Mag Polish on a cotton buffing wheel chucked up in a Dremel tool and those finish blemishes will buff out and virtually disappear.

As I said before, you did well for $1000. Personally, I think $1800 in valuation might be a stretch. Given the condition of the stocks and the revolver, I stick by my estimation of $1500. Then again, on GunJoker we see people bidding absurd amounts of money for S&W revolvers made in greater numbers than yours.

It disappeared sometime between when I shot it last week and when I cleaned it the two days ago. I must now endeavor to melt plastic and make a new one.
