There are different types of licenses for having weapons in Italy, the most common are: for sporting use and hunting. It is important for all of them not to have criminal records or complaints. To get it you have to present health and police documents and wait several months to receive the license, but it is very very easy for the license to be revoked. The license for individual protection it's very rare and difficult to get. Weapons and powders cannot be sent by post, but only sent via armory / armory. This is only a small part of the story.

I would add that before you get a license to buy a gun you need two health documents: one from your doctor (family doctor) and then another from a health officer. The duration of these certificates (and therefore of the license) is five years! The family doctor's certificate must specify that you do not take drugs, do not abuse alcohol and that you do not have any illnesses that make you incapable of understanding and wanting even momentarily.
I think it's very difficult for you Americans to understand these schizophrenias!
In addition, before asking for a license at the nearest police station, it must be obtained from a shooting range (National Target Shooting) that certifies the ability to handle weapons .. with a theoretical lesson of a couple of hours and two shooting tests (handgun and rifle) with a minimum score on the target.
Finally, there is a limit to the possession of guns: three for home defense, twelve sporting guns, an unlimited number of hunting guns (long only), eight antique guns (pre 1890)
And it's not over yet........
