I've always liked the weird and unusual, and have owned several over the years, i.e., M686 chambered in 38 Special, M586 in 38 Special, M681 in 38 Special and lots of others.

One that was purported to have been made is a M581 chambered in 38 Special for the New York Transit Police......

Has anybody ever seen or owned one?

Please make my day and show one....... :)

My unusual config, a 65-3 4-inch round-butt from approximately 1984. It was discussed a few days ago in this thread: Info needed for 65-3, Chicago area. Sounds like it was very likely a special order for Chicago-area law enforcement that ended up going to a Chicago-area security company instead.
Obviously the Badger grips are not original to this gun, but the Pachmayr that came on it was in pretty sorry condition. I'm guessing it came with Magnas but that's one thing still to be determined.

A couple of odd ones in my safe. A 647-1, A K-Frame in 17 HMR.
It came from the performance center with the bipod and optic.

642-2, should have been stainless steel. Has a ported barrel.

Everyone has seen Model 60-10, the J-frame S&W launched in 1996 built on the new J-Magnum frame to accommodate .357 Magnum.

Well, this ain't it.

This is the next one in model number sequence, the Model 60-11, and it's chambered for .38 Special.

It's my unicorn, the only one I've seen.

Dr. Jinks said it was in a shipment of one to Lew Horton in December 1998. He also said most in this serial series went to Argentina and Thailand.

Every time the oddities get discussed, I am reminded of something I read in the SCSW, either 3rd or 4th Edition or both.

We all are aware of S&W’s first ever commemorative revolver, the Model 19-3 for the 150th anniversary of the Texas Rangers. This was a 4-inch revolver with gold inlay and the Texas Rangers logo on the side plate along with similar emblems in the Presentation stocks.

An added oddball feature was the half-width shaved trigger guard that probably served almost no tangible extra benefit, but it’s different and interesting. Finally, my point! The SCSW suggests that S&W made production over runs of this revolver that were not marked as TR Commemorative guns and should otherwise be out in the wild as “regular” 19-3 revolvers… but wearing that half-shaved trigger guard!

Anyone ever seen one? Or even a picture of one that suggests this actually happened?

I have a 6" 686-3 that says .38 S&W SPL. +P on the barrel. I got an extra cylinder, fitted it and rechambered it for 357 SIG and cut it for moon clips. It's the only one that I know of. It works great, but I only shoot light target loads in it. Full power loads might blow it up. Full loads would probably work in an N frame, though.

Drove through southern Argentina Nov-Dec 2023. Almost all of the State Police and Provincial Officers were packing Autos. I saw what looked like some L frames in Chile but not in 'Tina. There were several check points where all vehicles were required to stop and several where they pulled over who they wanted.
I wasn't about to ask one to show me his gun.

Here's a bit of an oddball - a 686-6 chambered in .38 Spl, six-round cylinder with a 3" barrel (came originally with rubber Uncle Mikes {Spegel design} stocks)...

Here's what Roy had to say about it:
Bob, product code 164388 is a Model 686 3 inch barrel, caliber .38 S&W Special and was shipped in April 2010. It was a special but I do not have much information on it. I found just two units in this serial range and they went to different distributors which lead me to believe the were made early as a special order and these over runs from that order and S&W was cleaning out their inventory. That is the best I can do. Roy

Adios,

Pizza Bob
