I was listening to the Red Eye Radio guys and they were talking about your vehicle sending info to your automaker. They in turn send it to Lexis Nexis. From there the insurance companies get your driving habits and adjust your rates accordingly. This is scary and very frustrating. According to the article in the NY Times, it shows sudden stops and accelerations. It doesn't describe what that looks like. I had to break the article into 3 files. Not sure what it looks like. You can Google it by searching for automakers and Lexis Nexis. Also, should you choose, you can search Lexis Nexis and Opt out to have them stop sharing your info. I think this is going to be a story that will hit the Government radar. Hopefully they do something about it.

Here is the link but, you might not be able to see it without subscribing.

My insurance company offers a discount if you let them evaluate your driving patterns via a phone app. I'm giving it a try to see how much of a discount, if any, I can get.

I tend to drive faster than most, with quick stops and acceleration, routinely a bit over the speed limit, but I do come to full stops at stop signs, and I don't drive at 3 AM — actually, hardly ever at night — so we'll see how it goes.

If my insurance company and car manufacturer track me around and discover my favorite supermarkets, restaurants, shooting range, and gas stations, I don't think I care...

I did the phone app with Travelers. Only issue was going through a car wash I would loose contact and Travelers thought I was trying to avoid their tracking system. Still got a discount can't remember how much.

Un fortunately , give them an inch and they will take a mile.
Just like gun rights ,I am giving nothing away.

I'm all for most progress, etc., however there's "just a tad" too much sharing of info from our cars. I won't get into it as we all know. But, they listen in on cell phone conversations and key words will perk their ears up. Example, my friend and his electrician B I L were talking about a 30 amp dimmer switch for something when, during their conversation his BIL's phone got a text advertising dimmer switches. "Big brother" may be a little late from 1984, but he's here now, alive & well.

When I switched insurance companies so my cars, house, and bike would be covered by one company they told me I could get a discount with a thing that plugged into the OBDII port for 90 days.

I told them I kinda drove fast, they said the only things they were concerned with was fast take offs, and fast stops.

I could check it online myself to see how my driving was. In a little less than 3 months I had 4 fast stops, and no fast take offs. I was paranoid I wouldn't get the discount. They told me I did great, that some people had more than that everyday.

Yeah, we had a similar deal when we first started with Allstate. We got something like a 10% discount.
Then they discontinued the dongle that plugged into the OBDII port and replaced it with an app, that required turning on GPS tracking on my phone.
A little too much potential for abuse IMO. We declined the offer.

We are being rated out by our cell phones as well.
And add to that all the purchases we make with CCs and debit cards.

John

Many of the CC's are implementing a new merchant code to track gun and ammos sales by merchant. "They" say they don't track individuals, now, but compare that statement to many gun control advocates about the issue.

I won't post her comments here, hopefully so as not to get dinged, but search for Sen. Warren, Credit Card and gun violence.

Legislators are not that smart.

My agent contacted me once to see if I was interested in one of the recording devices because it would save me “A Lot of Money “……. I asked if he’d be interested in me putting a recording device in his bathroom. He didn’t ask again.

Define fast. A 50% throttle takeoff in the Jag XKR I used to own could put you near "demonstration of speed" citation, and yet it is clearly well within the capabilities of the vehicle and any half competent driver. For a 420 hp car it was stupid easy to drive.

I have heard that those plug in devices cause issues with your car's computer. No thanks, I don't want to save a couple of bucks that bad. As was already said, Big Brother gets enough info from our phones, don't need to give them more.

Same scenario from our national insurer which required the phone app. Even MsNative who looks for savings in all things said "Hell to the No!".

A buddy of mine had one of the reporting apps, and his insurance shot up after a trip to Florida because, horror of horrors, he kept up with Interstate Traffic!

That's the thing I like about old vehicles, new tracking tech doesn't work with them. Yeah, I know there are plate readers, but if a vehicle is registered and insured as DBA/LLC...
If you're that paranoid, there are pouches for smartphones that block RF signals.

Can I get a car-sized Faraday bag? Maybe a wrap with the copper mesh?
