The 13-2 was the final pinned and recessed model. It was manufactured from 1977 through 1981. The 13-4 was the final model with all forged parts, and was made up through 1996. The pinned and recessed models are more collectable, especially in the 3". After that, the non-pinned and recessed 3" models are the most collectable. The final revolver issued to FBI special agents. They are all very fine sidearms and are a favorite of many shooters.

Yup saw that in the variations. Started as a 13-1. So what would be an earlier version with the heavy barrel?

I'd look for a -1 round butt with 3 inch heavy barrel. I had one once but made the mistake of letting my son, and his wife, shoot it. It's been their house gun for ten years or so.

As an aside, some of the late 13-2's had recessed cylinders, but were not pinned. However, I have not seen the reverse, but that does not mean they are not out there somewhere.

Well, there wasn't an "earlier version" of the .357 M&P except for the relatively short run of the Model 10-6 chambered for the magnum cartridge (which, like all -6 variants, had the heavy barrel). As mentioned by others, the 10-6 .357 was a relatively short run, most of which were sold to the NY State Police. I have two of them in my safe; both are former NYSP revolvers.

The early model 13 4” guns were square butt and the 3” round butts. The 13-4s were all round butt I think.

I have not seen a 3” model 13-1, but never say never with S & W.

Is there a way other that a letter to determine if a 3" 13 was an FBI issued gun? Maybe by a group of serial numbers?

DEF3, Good luck in your search for that M13.:)

This 13-4 is one of the last runs.
Has the serrated grip frame.
This one remains unfired.. for now.

Bought this one off a gun show table during set
up little over a year ago.
