The older Model 41 with the 7 3/8" barrel and muzzle brake has a threaded rod that serves as an internal weight and has a hole in the end for the brake to attach to. The rod screw into the barrel, and appears to have 3/8 fine threads. Can anyone confirm this?

Correct Tom, threads measure .375 on weights but I am unsure of pitch. I may be able to gauge if necessary as long as they are not S&W specific. The shoulder screw attaches cap or brake to the weight. Mine is circa 1965, muzzle brake, cap, light and heavy weights.

Thanks Mike. I took a chance and used my 3/8 NF tap through and it worked great. Then I took a file to the steel weight as I don't have a 3/8 NF die, to clean up the damaged thread on the end of the weight and **magic** everything works like it should!

I picked up this gun yesterday. It's a Model 41, made in the early 60's, with both the 7 3/8" barrel and the 5" barrel, two mags, the aluminum and steel weight, compensator and end cap, and to top it off, the original box! Gun isn't mint but it's pretty close. Now I need to know which of the other 3 Model 41's needs to go to make room.

I wish that I had that "problem", tough decision...Probably let the most modern or newest one go. The fit & finish just doesn't compare to more vintage model 41's.

I would probably find the room somehow, maybe another safe, rather than dispose of a perfectly good pistol. Besides, another safe allows for additional expansion.

The 1st one I would trade off is a new model 5.5”. The last one would be the 7 3/8” with break that looks the oldest. I’ve not shot the 5” sport barrels enough to have opinion on them yet. I do like the 73/8 & 7” models better than 5.5” HBs.

I already have two, a Browning and a Fort Knox. I suppose I could get rid of my freezer to make room for another. :D
