Owner should have gotten a permit. On the other hand the state is just being jerks. Social media should explode with protest and demand local representatives do something. But then its NY…….

The owner was actively applying and in the process when this went down.
Now we get to make popcorn and see how the civil cases pan out

Anyone wanting a coon can visit me with a live trap. Three or four get into my back yard most every night. I haven't seen my Black Buzzard friends for nearly a week. I won't say how I discouraged them, but it worked.

From USA Today:

It's not legal to keep wildlife as pets in many parts of the country, but people licensed as wildlife rehabilitators can legally care for them in New York as long as they plan to release them back into the wild once they are well. It's not clear whether Longo had gone through or begun the process of becoming a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, but he had also established a nonprofit called P'Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary.
It appears the people involved were breaking the law on two counts, keeping wild life with no intent to rehabilitate them for future release and not actually being licensed under the law to perform such service. So from a legal prospective, the state was in the right. However their actions after confiscating the animals were reprehensible in my opinion. Isn't rabies detectable, either via blood testing or quarantine? If the animals turned out to be negative, then they could either have been given to a licensed facility or released to the wild.

Well seem social media has gone off on the NY state game wardens. Musk even has a contribution. NY game wardens were just going nazi on the couple. Real problem were the neighbors that complained. Another case of people not minding their own business. The other question is why did they move to NY????

The guy saw Peanuts mom get hit by a car in NYC, seven years ago. He took Peanut in and did try to release him back into the woods but Peanut came back and never left. The guy left Connecticut and moved to NY to start an animal sanctuary, they should have moved a few more miles down the road to PA.

NY tax dollars at work, how much payroll did this raid cost?

Meanwhile the NYS DEC ignores illegals poaching and hunting out of season all over upstate NY.

As already stated, the animals could have been tested for rabies w/o killing them.
Then go from there once the results are known.

Rabies is nothing to mess with and take a cavalier attitude toward.

There was some statement about the DEC and other LE at the scene were looking into the guy's wife and her legal immigrant status as well.
Can't believe everything they print, but it's out there.

A bit heavy handed looking in from the outside and w/only the news reports and the victims statements to go on.

K, when did a new rabies test become SOP? Only one I knew was the animal had to be put down and internal organ tested.
99% of tree rats are Not your friend but there are always exceptions as in this case.
How many here have had a " wild" pet that lived in their house?
