5906 PPC

I have come across a very exciting opportunity to pick up a rarely seen PPC long slide. Problem is it has a 15-round magazine not legal in my state. Will a 5906 10-round magazine work in that gun? Does anyone know, how many 6" guns may have been produced.

In 2000 they made the 5906 "Super 9" it came with 3 - 5" bbls, 9x19, 9x21, 356 TSW. It also came with a tuned single action trigger. (I can't find a 6" 5906 in S&W 4th edition)

Wow, congrats Dino44, I hope it works out. I have a Super 9 that I believe has the 10 rd. mags.

Congratulations, the 5906 PPCs are SUPERB firearms

And the 5906 PPC auto loaders were not produced in runs of pistols. They were built one gun at a time when ordered. The reason these are so scarce is that they could only be ordered on law enforcement letterhead specifically for the use of a sworn officer shooting PPC matches. Because of this one at a time production, there is no string of serial numbers for us to figure out how many were manufactured

The 5" variation was the original 5906 PPC

Many years after the 5" pistol, the Performance Center began offering these with a 6" barrel

The 6" guns also altered the cocking serrations, going to the fish scale style of serration which I think looks more attractive

The only reference I could find in the 4th edition is in the list of performance center product codes on pg. 435 left hand column about 2 3rds of the way down, product code # 170223FC. Other information I found searching the forum and google images. See colt_ssa's picture of a 6" gun in this thread. That is exactly like the one I see in the gun shop.

colt_ssa, Thank you Sir, for the additional information. I now have a different problem. While I was contemplating the magazine issue here in CT. This afternoon, I came into possession of a beautiful 945-1. Now I have to figure out how to fund the PPC. I will start a new thread to show off the 45.

This is an earlier version of the PPC9,5''. It has a shorter dust cover. This one was delivered in January of 1998. Serial number PPC01XX

Excellent, sndbggr1484. Thanks for sharing your photo. I have a 952-1 that I bought five or so years ago. It's a fantastic shooter. I can only imagine the PPC guns to be as good or better in more capable hands than mine. Hopefully I will add the six-inch PPC to my collection and find out how good the long slide shoots.

There has been discussions here about recoil springs for the 5” PPC9’s. I’ve participated in some.

What recoil springs do the 6” PPC9 use? I don’t think it will ever be an issue for me I’m just always thinking about stuff.

Jim

Dino44,

On the right side of a 6'' PPC9 it is stamped 5906. Didn't say ''Model 5906''

Left mag is a 10 round with extended mag base. Middle is a 15 round with extended mag base. Right one is a 15 round with standard mag base. When you ordered a 5'' or 6'' PPC9 you got 3 mags with extended mag bases. Early guns came with 15 round mags and later they came with 10 round mags.

4T5GUY,
I checked 2- 6'' PPC 9'S and found they use the same recoil spring guide as the 5'', however the springs were one coil shorter on the 6'' than 5''. When these first came out some had to change recoil springs depending on ammo but S&W didn't say what weight spring they sent or what the standard one was that it came with. I should of compared an IDPA 5906 to see what that spring looked like for comparison.

Also, there's a guy who posted on auction site recently who has the CP Bullets basepads for 5906 PPC/Target Champ/4006 Limited/3566. I bought 10 of them. PM me and I'll give you info

I have always wondered why they put the "PPC" guns on the 59 double stack frame when the match is run in 6 shot strings. A 39 single stack base would have worked as well and feels better in MY hand.

sndbggr1484, "On the right side of a 6'' PPC9 it is stamped 5906. Didn't say ''Model 5906'' I don't recall that much detail. I think I saw Model 5906 on the left side above the serial number and maybe 5906 on the right side. I plan to look at it again this week if it's still there and when a decision maker is available. The clerk I talked to could not tell me if they could alter the 15 round magazine down to 10 for legal purposes.

It just depends what time they made the gun. Mine were very early guns. Mine and the one my wife had both had model 5906 on them. I never shot mine it was a backup for a 6" Springfield. I always hated the fishscale stuff, and some are really sharp.
Great guns, and very dependable. I preferred the trigger on the PPC 9 so had a lever trigger on my 1911.
Only thing I hated about them, is I let someone talk me into selling them my wife's gun. I still shoot the old 5" gun often. It still shoots dead on small groups after a bizillion rounds. Hope you get it.

I would love to hear what kind of price tag it’s got. These don’t trade hands all too often, but we’ve seen a couple bidding wars on Gunbroker a handful of years back that got far beyond ridiculous… as in, trying to figure out what you think top market would be, add 25% to whatever number you think that is… then double it.

Fantastic pistol, would love to own one, can’t imagine that I ever will.

Lucky for me I can at least shoot one, my best GunBro has one, he traded to get it and I helped to orchestrate the trade.

When I said it was an exciting opportunity, part of that was based on price. I only found two 2024 transactions that exceeded $2900 each. This one is priced well below that. I will divulge the out the door price if I am able to get it.
