Without pics we're stabbing in the dark. A perfect one with its original grips might be worth $800 or more, while a well-used shooter with fake plastic stag grips might be worth $400 or less.

It almost certainly left the factory in 1958.

As others have stated, it is almost impossible to place value without clear photos from all angles. It is even better to examine the gun in person. Basically beyond what comes with the gun, box, papers, original cleaning kit and sight adjustment tool (screw driver) the next 3 criteria are condition, condition and condition.

Typically collectors pay the highest prices and if all of the elements above are present then the price reaches the top of the range. As these elements are missing then the price drops. Shooters are less concerned with many of these items and therefore typically won't pay the top prices in the range.

Welcome to the Forum! Condition, condition, condition! The value of vintage revolvers almost always depends upon its condition. Is the finish in Excellent shape with beautiful bluing, or does it show a lot of wear or has it been re-blued? Are the wood stocks original and in good condition? Is the revolver mechanically sound and tight? You get the idea. Pictures would certainly help us provide you with a more accurate valuation. The s/n of that particular revolver equates to a manufacture date of 1958 (as provided by JP@AK). S&W started using model numbers in 1957, so yours is a fairly early Model 17. Prior to 1957, those revolvers were known as K-22 Masterpiece.
