This is a model 29 from 1960.

I've done some woodworking. Black walnut and Brazilian rosewood have a very similar appearance. I think these might be rosewood but would like other opinions. I must say, I really like the overall appearance.

Seem to remember reading a recent post by our 44 Magnum guru, but since I can't find it at the moment and as memory fails occasionally these days, I won't quote his name, that in looking at hundreds of sets of "cokes" he'd never seen any in anything except GA.
GA varies a lot in color and grain.

Think what Bill said was that he had never seen Walnut. Here are some Rosewood "Cokes" with no checkering.

I would have guessed Rosewood. In any event, they are beautiful.

Looks like they may have spent some time riding around in a left-hand holster(?)

David, you're correct, I found the post. The comment was relative to walnut, having never seen "cokes" in walnut.

So, I've got a few sets I've wondered about but generally concluded "cokes" are GA although early target stocks might have been in rosewood or other types of wood. I posted this modified 28-2 for another issue earlier today and now I'm wondering about the cokes on it; GA or rosewood?

I've assumed the non-relieved N targets shown below were rosewood.

So plain targets with no checking have palm swells? Were Rosewood target ever factory checked?

None that I remember seeing, noticeable palm swells on smooth targets that is.

The checked targets were on a 1953 357 Magnum and given the history of the gun I'm pretty sure they shipped on it from the factory. Rosewood?

Two observations. First. Almost all stocks, from their beginning, on 44 Magnums in Bill's book are as dark as those shown above and with extra dark streaking. He does not, however, state the wood used on any of his examples so I would assume GA? Second, they are also all matte finished into the 1960s. OP's are not matte so wonder if refinished or buffed?? Maybe he will stop by soon to further discuss the issue.

Some of the really early ones can be pretty curvy and also have a pronounced flare at the bottom. Calling them smooth cokes would be well.. a matter of opinion.

I do notice a few of them have been on engraved or special order guns.

As far as checked rosewood targets, I own a set that I am very confident in but are k frame
