The photo of the underside of the stocks (post #18) supports the conclusion they are made of Goncalo alves. Jeff...the stocks on your 28-2 are also made of Goncalo alves (in my opinion).

Not sure how to describe it but these dark goncalo stocks often have very close dark streaking as seen in the attached pic. I have at least one set that are dark and have this same characteristic. Paplinkers stocks are rosewood.

GA was used for stocks from the 1950s forward.
As far as checked rosewood targets, I own a set that I am very confident in but are k frame
