Sgt. Mike Viet Nam Humor

Have seen this happen several times. Usually somebody that had "Homesteaded" some where and not deployed. We use to call them REMF's.

SES, Senior Executive Service. When hauling congressman and senators I had the pleasure of meeting several of them. Mostly recent college grads that knew the right people. Most of them were jerks. It's not who you know, it's......

When I made 1stSgt., I called the monitor and asked for a infantry line Company. I was told no! I asked why and his response was "You have been making all the deployments for the last so many years that you will not deploy overseas for another six years". I said you have to be kidding me. The answer was that guys had been "homesteading" for years and they had to be moved first, either they would take orders or get out.

The DI's at Ft. Puke would not even call us privates. We were TRAINEES.

Trainees would have been nice. We were called Ladies, Maggots and some names I am not allowed to put in print here. They are not supposed to do that nowadays. Will have to ask my Grandson what the DI's called them when he went through Boot Camp.

My favorite was T.U.R.D., Trainee Undergoing Rigid Discipline. Plus all the ones that AJ mentioned and a few more. To their credit, they never used the more derogatory expletives. I don't think I can use the letter or letters they imply.

Oh the fun we had.

I think I can honestly say that no Officer or Enlisted that I know would have done this. Now if someone was struggling, I saw folks take stuff from them to help them out. But never heard anyone ask.

Ran into some good inspection teams and ran into some bad ones. Always passed inspection no matter what. However, we did have one inspection team that was so screwed up our CO called them into the Ready Room as he was calling the Wing CG to let him know he was throwing the inspection team out of our area. He explained why and the CG agreed.

Don't think I ever got an order not to shave. It was a standing order from day one. Only when we were off could we get away with not shaving. In Iwakuni, Japan we either rode to town in a taxi or walked out the front gate. If you needed a shave walking out the gate the MP's on the gate would tell you to shave before they would let you go out on liberty.

Heck of a way to have a fishing trip ruined! Or a bit lost were they?

We weren't lost. Back in the day, coming out of the field, we used to drive down a rocky bottomed stretch of Cedar Creek. Knocked off a lot of the big mud before we got to the wash rack.

I was talking to my Grandson after he checked into his first permanent duty statin in the Corps. Before he had only been to Boot Camp and in schools commands to learn his primary MOS. When he told me he had to buy bedding and cleaning gear for his room, I couldn't believe it. All that stuff was provided when I was in the Corps (as it was in other services). I guess it was a great cost savings for the Corps not to have to pay for all that stuff.
