S&W 17-2 5 Inch Barrel

Thanks for posting the (closed) auction link.

This is how I would put this together. A model 14-2 cylinder is 1.56", and even with the angled side image in the auction the barrel is nowhere near four cylinder lengths. The barrel roll marks are centered. The limited views of the muzzle and front sight 'look' factory. The Baughman front sight and insert are not standard but appear factory as well, as does the end label.

So, without more information, I would guess this is a factory special order 5". Hopefully the buyer is a member here or gets a letter.

For comparison

Below is a picture of a 5" 38 barrel which I purchased and which is at my gunsmith's right now, replacing the barrel on a 6' barrelled narrow rib gun which had suffered severe exterior pitting from a previous owner. The position of the roll marks, and their relationship to the ramped front sight of the Model 17 in question, appear very similar to my eye. Without their being side by side for comparison, it would be tough to say, but I can guarantee that mine is a 5" barrel.

RJ, here's the picture of your 5" barrel with a (rotated and rescaled) picture from the GB ad, overlaid and lined up on the ejector rod bump. Looks like a match to me.

The fact that it's has a Baughman fs on the long ramp is pretty good indication it was a special order so not difficult to ask for a 5" barrel as well, will be interesting to see if the insert is oem too.
It's definitely a 17 frame but seeing the pics I'm wondering if it has the standard tapered rib 17 barrel or is it a narrow rib like the 18.

Neat variation.

It may just be the angle, but these 2 pics look like a 5"er to me. I'm hoping it is, and the buyer is a member here already or comes here for information after they have the gun in hand.

It appears to be a model 14 style barrel to me, untapered with the wide rib.

My 17-2 has the normal 6" barrel. Shipped in 1964. They are tack drivers! Bob

Just to be clear the wider rib K22 barrel does taper as it gets closer to the muzzle but is wide at the rear where it meets the frame unlike the Model 14 which is wide its whole length.

On a side note the K22 barrel got the same wide rib profile as the Model 14 but not until the 17-5 revision.
