Ran across a 1086 in 10mm at a local gun store and as I'm looking at it I notice the price. $1850! Holy moly! Is this gun really worth that kind of money? The gun store guy said it was a scarce model, which is why it was listed that high. He must have saw my face. lol

With just over 1600 made, it’s pretty rare. You don’t see them often, so tough to put a hard price on it, especially since you didn’t say if it came with original box, etc. If it’s in good condition and with original box, etc., $1850 doesn’t seem too unreasonable. I know if I found one in good condition with box at that price, I’d buy it…I’ve been looking for one off and on for years. If you look at my signature line, you may realize I’m a bit bit biased though:)

Thoughts? You should spend more time on this forum. ;)

I'm not a 10mm or 10xx fan in particular, but that seems high. OTOH, I looked on line at gunbroker and there are three that are listed at pretty close to $2,000.00. One of them has a box, one magazine, and I think the manual. The other one has one magazine.

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson says a total of 1,660 were made from 1990-92.

There were two different SKUs, one for the "second handguard" one for the "third handguard."

I've seen first and third handguard guns, but have no idea what the second handguard looks like.

HA!!! I do go between forums, but tend to spend 95% of my time over there. But this is definitely the best place for S&W questions. Very informative people.

This is definitely the best place for S&W questions. The other place is good for general gun information and political discussions. Unfortunately, it has a higher idiot quotient than most other forums. Some are entertaining, but idiots none the less.

I'm a Shooter so "Collector" priced guns don't attract much interest from me . All I can tell you is I will not be paying S1850 for one.
I guess the question you gotta ask yourself is ...
are you a shooter ... or a Collector !

I remember looking at one of those in a pawnshop 20 or so years ago.
Price was $400.00.
I did some research during the next week and found out how uncommon they were.
I went back the next week when I was in town and it was gone.
That has haunted me ever since.

3rd gens are climbing, I'm okay with that.
Personally, whether or not I'd shoot it would be immaterial in buying it, but the third gens are becoming some of the most sought after pistols of today.
I'd jump on it if I were you and then share it with us.

1046 Lg DAO - 151
1066 Compact TDA - 5067
1076 Compact Frame Mtd Decocker - 13805 incl FBI
1086 Compact DAO - 1660

3914TSW - 1060
3954 - <1000
4014 - 550
4054 - 154
4056TSW - 1100
6944 - 742
Shorty40 - 1500
Shorty40 variants - 179 to 662 ea variant

Interesting that the 1086, particularly a DAO, at 1660 units commands an $18xx price tag while others with lower counts can frequently be had for $600-1200 range, with many in the $600-800 range. But then any 10xx will bring $1000.

As to shooting vs safe queen, I dont plan to shoot my NIB 4054, but I will shoot my used 4014 and clean and sore it properly - it all depends on condition and whether you have others to shoot.

I have been on 3rd Gen buying spree the last few years and am up to 10 for now. Always on the prowl for more

Rareity doesn't always equate to value, unfortunately.

This might be an unpopular opinion and it isn't my intention to rain on any parades as that's never my goal, but in my own mind, I struggle with stuff like this and I can tell you why:

short print variants of full-production guns have always been this way for me and it's almost impossible for me to find interest and justify chasing them at their price, and mostly because I'm such a tremendous fan of the Performance Center pistols.

And I -love- the 10xx guns, I started shooting my 1006 in 1993.

Let me give an easy example-- the mysterious and damn near vaporware 4505 pistol. Talk about a gun you never see, hell we barely even discuss this pistol because it nearly does not exist.

It's a 4506 but in blue steel. That's exactly 100% of what it is and it's no more than that. 4506's are cool but if you have any experience at all with an 845, a 4506 is like comparing a Mazda Miata to a Ferrari.

If you find a 4505 somewhere and the seller knows what he has, it's gonna be priced like an 845. And I couldn't ever convince myself to spend PC money on a production gun.

I would be more inclined if the PC guns did not exist and I had no idea what was possible with the 3rd Gen layout when executed by a genuine artist.

I broke this up in to two posts.

My 1006 is one of my favorite guns. I won't be caught dead with a 1046, at least not for any real stretch of time before I absolutely sell the ever lovin' hell out of it.

Roy Jinks wrote a factory letter once, the image I have seen was a letter from 2010. That might have been the first one. But to my point, he published a letter that detailed specifically the numbers that ACEd just did, that's where those numbers came from.

I believe if that letter never existed and none of those numbers had ever been released, the S&W 1046 would not trade hands for the kind of money that we've seen.

And if you think an $1,850 tag on a 1086 is ludicrous, start shopping for a S&W 1046. Or rather, sell your car and start shopping for a S&W 1046. And after you have peeled off many thousands and you have your grail 1046, understand that you now own an extremely scare production gun with that... ummm... DAO trigger. For -way- more money than my 4006 Limited which might be even more scare, less units produced. (I'm still unsure about this!)

And a 4006 Limited is far more capable than a 1046, except perhaps in bullet speed, by like 150 fps.
