My 22's Just Got Reamed*****( See Post 32 )*****

When I was doing my apprenticeship, we had product called Tap-Magic. It was for use on steel and as the name implies, for tapping holes. It didn't take long to figure out it also worked great for drilling and if used for reaming, the holes looked almost polished. It's still around today, but the formula was changed back in the 80's and it's no longer near as good.

Thought that name rang a bell so I went and verified it. I need to ream my 940 cylinder one of these days...

All three of these got a cylinder reaming today thanks to Charlie Baker loaning me his reamer, and they all needed it.

Top to bottom
3T model 17-4
3T model 18-3
1968 Model 17-3

Will try them out on Thursday

I know, lousy picture

Charlie Baker must one of those Great Human Beings.
I need to buy or borrow one of those myself. If someone is willing to give me his contact information, I will even donate some money to him for use of the reamer.

Although most any kind of cutting oil works, one of the best out there is Boelube, available on Amazon. It was developed by the Boeing Airplane Co.
They know a few things about cutting metal. You can get it in liquid or paste form. The liquid is best for things that don't generate much heat. The paste needs to melt from heat in order to work, but stays in place better until it melts. The home workshop will be best served by the liquid form.

What's the chamber before and after diameter? Is there a pilot on front of reamer that centers reamer in the throat?
Tks

I do not have those measurements. Suffice it to say that it went from pushing in to drop in and drop out on inverting the loaded cylinder.

Yes there is a pilot on the reamer

I took my guns out today, and tried them. I used 50 YO Remington golden bullets, and all was fine. I then switched to bulk Aguila ammo that has a waxy feeling to it. I wrote about this ammo in the ammo section a couple weeks ago.

A few cylinders of this stuff, and the loading and unloading started to get hard again, so I stopped. I will clean the guns and use the remainder of this ammo in a single shot bolt action rifle.

I am confident everything was done properly when reaming was done. You can look in the cylinders and see residue from firing this ammo

From my reading on the subject, Manson reamers are the way to go at present time.

I imagine the Manson cylinder reamer cuts to the SAAMI LR Sporting chamber spec, not the various super tight/short freebore like are available for precision target rifles.
They make two styles of cylinder reamer:
1. with changeable pilot bushings, for absolute perfect fit to your cylinder throats. They cost considerably more than:
2. with fixed pilot. I chose this one because I'm not seeking nor would I likely find, nor could I take advantage of that kind of precision chamber to bore alignment from chamber to chamber in a mass produced stock revolver.

Yes the copper washed bullets are cleaner/undersize. The downside they don't group tight in my 18-3. I polished my chambers with JB on a tight patch. It didn't make the chambers larger but made them much smoother, switched from CCI SV to Fed gold metal match which use a hard lube.
Easy extraction / cleanup.

Just another option if anyone doesn't want to ream. Granted my 18 doesn't have super tight chambers but SV would gunk it up good after 50 rds.

Personally, *I* would not knowingly hold stock in a company who opposes the 2nd Amendment. But I'm funny that way...........

IDK,Bezos himself has donated millions to PACs supporting the right and pro gun candidates. He has changed the Washington Post editorial page for the better by moving it right of center. But most importantly he has more than doubled my money since the stock split. Even with the recent market setback. I don’t mix business and politics. Or religion for that matter.
