One of my friends wanted to show me his appreciation for the car seat I fixed in his Genies last week. His car was still under warranty but the dealer told him the seat back was not warranted. I fixed it for him in about a half hour and to show his appreciation he brought me a bottle of Angels Envy Triple Oaked Bourbon. I have had their regular version but not the triple oaked - until this evening of course. It was 92 proof and for the 46% alcohol it contains I thought it had a bit too much heat. After a few minutes with a Gentleman's ice cube in the glass, it did mellow out a bit and was not bad. For the price of $75 / 750ml I would not go out to purchase it as I feel for a bourbon in that price range there are better bourbons to choose from. Just my opinion of course but I was a bit underwhelmed.

That's the problem, I shouldn't say problem it's just a matter of opinion. Everyone's palette is different so when discussing taste or heat it all subjective. I haven't had the triple oaked but I've had Angles Envy and it good but not that good, A bit over priced & hyped.

My brother gave me a bottle of James E Pepper (new to me) for Xmas. It's the best bourbon I've had in while. I highly recommend it, if you get a chance try it.

I assume you meant GENESIS. Find it difficult to believe the seat back structure is not a warranty item. Especially with that model.

Not a bourbon but the single barrel Jack Daniels is the best they ever put out to me....
I agree! Not your regular JD for sure! One of my fav's (also not a true Bourbon) is the JD Sinatra Select. A bit pricey at $179.00 / bottle but I do truely enjoy and sip it slowly! When it's on sale at Costco for $149 my wife or kids will usually get a bottle and save it for my Birthday, Father's Day or a special occasion. It is incredible!

My favorite bartender gave me a sample of Jack Daniels Single-Cask something that was 130 proof. Smelled like drugstore rubbing alcohol and taste like it too. Burned a bit going down. He gave it to me on a dare, saying everyone gags on it. I didn't but could see why. I certainly wouldn't pay good money for a bottle.

Not a bourbon drinker as yet but I'm going to try to learn about the different versions. I recently got that same bottle of Angel's Envy, a bottle of Blanton's, a Mid priced Elijah Craig and a bottle of Buffalo Trace. I'm currently laid up with a medical issue but when I get clearance, I intend to do a little experimenting.

I'm not a fan of the heavily oaked bourbons. I like the ones that are a little sweet and smokey. Apparently I don't have very sophisticated tastebuds as my favorites aren't generally real expensive. I do like the 1792, which is pretty reasonable, but then I like Jim Beam Black too. Makers Mark is usually my safe bet bar choice. It tastes decent and every bar has it. I have a pretty extensive bourbon collection but I've found my taste buds to be somewhat plebian so my more fancy stuff usually goes to guests.

A lot of the fancy brands have less expensive brands that use the same mash bill. Difference is age and where and how it's stored. For instance, Buffalo Trace has the Benchmark brand. Same mash bill, less expensive and easier to find. Larceny is the same mash bill as Old Fitzgerald. Again, less expensive and easier to find.

I bought a case of the Buffalo Trace from one of the mail order places before it became well known. I saved one bottle. It was drinkable but the 1792 is much better. I think the Buffalo Trace is badly overrated unless they've really upped their game.

Buffalo trace is a good Bourbon "for the price". Locally it sells for about $28 / 750ml bottle. For that price it is decent IMO. If the cost were $40+ then I would buy a few others before buying Buffalo trace. 1792 is also a decent Bourbon for the price of about $26 bucks and I do buy it and drink it. If it were a vastly more expensive Bourbon, then again I would buy other brands before it.

BTW, Eagle Rare blows them all out of the water IMHO! Eagle Rare, Blanton's, Travelers, 1792 and Buffalo Trace are all the same company. I think the Eagle Rare is the best of the lot - even over the more expensive Blanton's.

Wild Turkey 101....
The convenience of premix cans is a bonus. Uncouth and not very hi brow i know, but neither am i....

It's my go to.
Makers Mark, Jim beam Rye or black, or Green....

If i'm flush and want to spoil myself George T Stagg if i can find it, but crikey it'e expensive here!

I think I have all of those except the Travelers. I didn't know they were all the same company.

Some years ago, watched a show on making scotch with old time brewmasrers/tasters.
Advice before sipping, add a few drops of water. It immediately takes away most of the bitter bite. I assume same goes for US liquor where use of ice is more prevalent.

Not a top shelf Bourbon guy as I am a poor soul. Makers Mark, Angels envy, knob creek, Jim Beam, George Dickel are on the shelf of the basement bar.
A friend is a real bourbon guy and has his collection insured for $60,000 whats really neat is he drinks it and shares it. He will open any bottle he has for a taste or two, can't take it with you he says.

I spotted this at the Class VI a few weeks ago - doesn't seem to be selling much. I'd love to try it but refuse to spend that much (I'm cheap) so if anyone wants a review, just send me some $$ and I'll let you know. ;)

The Double Oaked which is my favorite, runs about $70 now for comparison.
