I got a DENIED the other day...

Back several years, each time I bought a gun, my check came back conditional. Big box stores will not release the gun. My LGS, just said don't make me come back to your house for this. I learned about getting a Unique PIN and received one. Never an issue since. I never learned why either. I just assumed it had something to do with my new job and upgraded security clearance (TS-SCI) as it never happened until then. Now that I am retired, wonder if it will follow me? Any security people on here know?
I never had any gun purchasing issues when I held a TS/SCI clearance. I just use my GA WCL/CCW card. First two pages on the 4473. Then I have my gun and out the door. Easy peesey. Never had the problems described in this thread. I suppose that the unique identifier number would be a way to go if the issues persist.TSA uses something similar I believe. Never had to use them.

I've been bit by the Sig 365 bug recently. First a 365-380, and the other day I decided to get one in 9mm. Filled out the paperwork and looked around to see if there was anything else I couldn't live without. After about 20 minutes one of the young fellows who works there came up with a really confused look and said..."You got denied?" He was more confused than I was I think. I've got a pretty common name, so this kind of thing happens. Although not this specific one. Then he gave me a phone number to call at the state police and talk to them about it.

Called the state police (Virginia State Police run the background check) and talked to a supervisior. He said there were three assualt charges showing on my record. Well, they ain't mine I told him. He said he'd check. Hold on a few minutes.

About ten minutes later I see the gun shop guy coming with the gun and paperwork. He said "We got an "approved" (or whatever the word actually is) and you're ready. He did some mumbo jumbo on the paperwork and I paid, and headed out the door. My phone rang. It was the fellow from the state police, apologizing for the mix-up. No explanation of what happened, but then I didn't really press it. I had the same thing happen some years ago when DMV credited me with a string of tickets in North Carolina and got my car insurance canceled. Got that situation straight too, with no real problems. When you got a name as common as "Bob Jones" you get used to it.

Yes, yes...it shouln't have happened, but it did, people make mistakes, and it got corrected quickly. No harm, no foul.

Oh the Sig? One of the NRA editions. I'd never heard of it until I got this one.

Bob, I was in law enforcement for 45 years and now retired. In that 45 years I think I've only had 1 incident where something similar happened while running someone's DL, DOB and SSN. It was totally my fault. Thank goodness it was corrected and you got your SIG!!!!

My Texas CHL means the call to NICS doesn't even get made......Ben
I'm in Texas also, but even with a CHL the dealer may do a NICS check, I had a LGS do that back during Covid, even though they had not done so before.

I remember having that done on me once by an out of town FFL...I asked if they do that with all CHL holders, and the answer was yes just to make them seem better during ATF audits...I was in no hurry, so the few extra minutes meant nothing to me...I cleared immediately and was on my way...I'm not sure how I would have responded if delayed because I was just passing through......Ben

Up until 3 years ago my background check would get approved while the sales person was on the phone with whoever they call . Nothing has changed in my life but since about 2022 I have been getting delayed and it always the next day where it gets approved . I always put my SS number although it is not required here in Mo . Anyway last week I make a purchase and the sales person asks me if I have a CCW , I say yes and hand it to him . The sales person writes some numbers on the 4473 and lets me take the gun . So far I have purchased three guns from different locations in MO with showing my CCW and no background check .

The state police can issue you a unique personal identification number (UPIN) which could help alleviate the issue in the future. Just put it on the form when you do your paperwork.

Do they even look at the SSN?
Probably not! There was a person with the same name as I, from my home State (same zip code, if you can believe it) name the same, except for the middle initial, and I had left the State at least 30 years before all this happened!. We both were volunteers for the 2002 Olympics, and I received a package for him, which I returned in person.
What are the odds?
After that, I kept getting calls from a collection agency, asking what I was going to do about the money owed? After several calls, I told them again..."NOT ME!" In desperation, I finally told the rep the last 4 digits of my Social Security Number, to which the person said "OH". That ended the calls. Every few years, I wonder whatever happened to him.

I had the same type of situation 15-20 years ago. My common name (like yours) subjected me to a delay every time. Couldn't even get an airline ticket that didn't have an "SSS" printed on it, which flagged me for "extra security." Contacted my congressman, who referred my case to the FBI (I think) which issued me a UPIN# to enter on the form...have not had a problem since.

I am not a security person but to add my related perspective- I've purchased a number of firearms when I held a TS-SCI, and more after retirement (the clearances ended when I retired). Never an issue before or after.
Does you state use the NICS system? Do you have a CCW license and your state accepts that in lieu of a background check? Having legally purchased firearms as a visa holder, on a Green Card, and as a citizen, details matter. :)

I'm a former intelligence officer and special security officer (SSO), never had any issues buying firearms- but when working special access programs with "continuous vetting" surveillance I have had federal agents I worked with comment "hey why was xyz agency running a check on you last week? Also crossing borders on vacation one time the border patrol inspector scanned my civilian passport and said welcome home captain. So apparently all the federal databases cross reference.
See my comments in post#56.

I am not sure what the ffl does with my GA WCL, but I am out of there in 30-60 dsec.
If you didn't see him make a call in those 60 seconds, you weren't run on NICS or whatever GA uses. It appears your concealed carry license is accepted in lieu of your background check, as mine is in NV.

Do you have a CCW license and your state accepts that in lieu of a background check?
Just to clarify that (and relying on my memory here) it is not a matter of your state accepting your CHL, but rather the Feds accepting your state's background check requirements (and the time limits in which it was done) as an exception to the NICS check...Not all state-issued CHL's meet those requirements...;)...Ben

Strictly speaking, yes. We are acutely aware of this in NV having had the CHL exemption discontinued for a few years. Apparently this was due to the state law not explicitly requiring a background check for a CHL renewal. Apparently some rural sheriffs issued renewals on the ability of the applicant to fog a spoon.
