What style hat does John Wayne wear in the movies "Rio Bravo" and "Hondo"?
The hat appears to be a "Cavalry Field Hat" and I think the original color was tan?
Is this syle hat offered in the modern hat market?

It's a John Ford cavalry hat. Real ones were black, but he thought white looked better, so put his cavalry in white hats. Lots of other movie makers copied him in that.

Lots of folks make copies of it. Just google hondo hat, or john wayne hat.

His are awful high, but he is the first one that popped up on the google search.

Going off on a tangent, I wonder what "naturally harvested" snake skin means? Going out in the desert and killing a snake, instead of raising the snake to be butchered? It sounds like it means you get the skin after the snake "naturally sheds it", but that won't work. The hat band for the J.B. Books hat.

Is Sammy Davis Jr.'s old autobiograghy "Yes I Can" there's a picture of him with John Wayne and SDJ says Wayne gave that hat to him. I saw that in my dad's book as a kid but remember that looking like the Rio Bravo hat.

Man, you guys got plenty of money. Even if I wanted a hat like that, I could not afford those prices. My top end for a Resistol or Stetson tops out at about $650. Then it best have a 5 inch brim. Even at that price, I only buy one about every five years.

My daddy always said if a person cannot run with the big dogs, they need to stay on the porch. Well I am sitting in my rocker on the porch. You guys are too rich for me.

I guess for an extra c-note they let some homeless guy wear it for a month...

On that Barons site you can also get the Quigley Down Under hat that Tom Selleck wore, or the Riflemans hat or Gunsmoke Marshall Dillions hat. Pretty neat.

The hat is in the upper left hand of this post.

You guys crack me up. I got 5 free Jack Daniels ball caps at my favorite liquor store last winter. That will last me 5 years if I last that long.

P.S. I've seen some people that can wear a Western style brimmed hat ala John Wayne, or any Texas cow person. I pretty much envy them. I've still got some Tony LLama boots I can't wear anymore. 25 yr old Pythons and Elephant (legal). I can't fit into them anymore cause when you get fat your feet do too.

With some folks it's high end watches....NO Timex for them...they can rationalize Rolex's and Omega's.

I personally would NEVER think of a kydex or (shudder) a nylon holster. I like dead cow. Made by Sparks or Kramer or El Paso Saddlery.

For others unless it says Snap-On or MAC it's not capable of turning a nut. No Sears tools in their thousand dollar + , roller bearing draw equipted, tool cabinet.

Personally I think cowboy hats ,especially the BIG ones...make a guy look like an ant carrying a potato chip. Know guys who wear them, always blowing off in the wind, gotta worry about how ya take em off...where ya put em...etc. Not for me.

Then again...The hi end , custom Cowboy hats, Rolex watches, are what make us Americans. We have the FREEDOM to buy those items if we WISH.

I guess it comes down to what you can afford and how bad we want it. If there wasnt another person in the world but us/you, how would we dress? What would we drive? I wear the most comfortable cloths possible most of the time. For me, comfort comes first followed by reliability etc. Many of us that live here, in the west also see cowboys wearing baseball caps rideing a horse! 45/50 years ago when I first wore a uniform we had to wear those stupid 8 point bus driver hats and neck ties in 110 degree heat on the desert! In the 60s the sheriffs dept by me was wearing helmits driveing cars! I am glad all that changed to where most depts now wear baseball caps, and I am quite sure the guys that wear them are too!
I like good quality stuff as much as anyone, however I am not into paying huge to wearing something with logos advertiseing their product, or what should be and probley are, $100 hats that sell for $700s to $3,000s with some rare logo or blessing from some "star", or aged by dragging it around tied to a bumper! That is pure BS salesmanship like someone selling you those pet rocks!
All jewlery made is always on sale for over 40% off, buy it, take it back and try getting 10% of that! These people that have to have a rolex to impress some twitt could do the same with a $30 fake that keeps just as good time!
I told this story before. A close friend told me of takeing his family to venice beach california. Thats one of those exspendsive store front areas with beach and the "in" crowd hang out with hopefull musicians etc act out strumming guitars or whatever. Anyway dan said there was a guy playing a guitar real good, and dan was a good player himself. He said a fairly good crowd was there listening and enjoying the music untill someone said loudly, OH! Thats just a sears guitar he`s playing! He said the crowd broke up and walked off! Some of this stuff gets superfical!

I've always wanted the hat worn by Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs in "The Natural".
He wore it in his first meeting with Pop Fisher (Wilford Brimley).

It was NOT a Biltmore Ark! But what???
