Default NHL STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS 2012

Welcome to the fun thread, where nobody knows what they are talking about.

Here we are once again, this will be the 5th year we have some fun at the S&W forum regarding good old hockey.

All those that participated in the past were nothing but great fans of hockey, whether their teams made it to the finals or not.

Mild digging here and there in good taste, but nothing nasty at all, just a great group of fans.

I hope some of you guys show up again and join the fun, otherwise this thread will go south fast.

Pick your team and see why this is the most difficult trophy to win in all sports.

Let's get ready and drop the puck at the S&W Forum.

Playoffs begin on April 11, 2012

Good luck to all, GO BRUINS/2nd favorite GO RANGERS

Blackhawks barely made it. We need to wait until the very last game of the regular season to see who we go up against. Gonna be tough. GO HAWKS!

As a 30 year Red Wings fan......

I don't think they'll get past the first round this year. The defense has too many holes, and the scoring is inconsistant. Powerplay? What powerplay?

With what I've seen, sorry to say looks like the Pens have the best shot.

Go pens...how can you not favor a team with NEAL(got #40 tonight), Malkin(sitting pretty near 50), Crosby(still has a chance at the scoring title...lol), Dupuis, and Letang. oh and i forgot MAF.

how does a coach defend against 2 number one lines and a 3rd line that is better than most other 2nd lines....you don't

i shaved for the last time tonight maybe...i usually don't start the beard until the playoffs actually start so i may shave again after their last game on saturday

Help me understand. I'm not a hockey fan but I'm forced to listen since I go to sleep listening to KMOX. I see how a player scores a goal but how do teams score points? I hear them say that a team might get a point even when they lose the game.

regulation is 60 minutes. a win in 60 min is 2 pts.
end the 60 min in a tie, each team gets one point. then a 5 minute over time period is played. if a team scores in ot, it gets the win and gets a 2nd pt. if neither team scores in ot, a shootout occurs. basically a penalty shot, best of 3 at the minimum. whoever wins the shootout, gets the 2nd pt

Great start, keep the posts coming gentleman.

Hey those Pens whipped my Bruins butts this evening, not fare.

Spelled butts with only one t, corrected immediately, that Spelling Bee from Florida is sniffing around.

TT is my fav. goalie, fleury scares me at times. it was nice to see both back ups playing tonight. and hopefully johnson is out of his slump. it was a good game, both teams got away with some hinky stuff, but you'll see that in the playoffs.

i question either the first or 2nd penalty that put the bruins down by two men, but we all know those calls tend to even out. even on the plus side of that, i don't like to see a bad call create pp goals.

a little off topic, and i'm asking as a "penguins homer", but what about mike milbury's comments about crosby and bylsma after sunday's game?

i won't comment being a pens fan, and please try to ut away any hatred you may have for crosby when commenting.

here it is for those that did not hear: Mike Milbury calls out Sidney Crosby for role in Penguins' brawl with Flyers - Winnipeg Free Press
on crosby: "Little goody two shoes (Crosby) goes into the corner and gives a shot to Schenn. Schenn was late to the party, he should have turned around and drilled him right away, but I guess better late than never," said Milbury, who is an analyst on CBC and NBC.

"So you know, Crosby gets cross-checked, big whoop. He said after he came back from his 35th concussion, 'I'm not going to do this anymore, I'm not going to get into this scrums, I'm going to stay away from that stuff.' He couldn't help himself because there's a little punk in Crosby.

"He's not the perfect gentleman. He's not the sweet kid you see in interviews with his hat pulled down over his eyes. I'd say screw him, hit him."

on dan bylsma: “I can remember being on a such a perch, or at least trying to climb over the boards to get at somebody to make a point. And I thought Dan Bylsma should have took off his skirt and gone over there. I thought it was pathetic.” Mike Milbury's Comments a Reminder of Where Hockey Must Still Change

the flyers, although one of the most penalized teams, also are up there in the league for the most power plays. why is this? because they instigate a lot, but don't get the original call, the opposing team gets the penalty for retaliating. this is one of the reasons they win games. their pp is good, plus it keeps the opposing team from getting into a "flow".

as far as crosby taking cheap shots and not getting called for them, well watch any player, you see it from anyone.

as far as the crosby/schenn exchange. lots of what sid did went on during the game. most from the flyers, hartnell to be specific if i remember correctly. that's normal in any hockey game. it may not be right, but it happens. what don't happen is a guy taking a shot, well after the whistle, to the back of an unsuspecting player who is on his way to the bench.

i digress...

but i said comment on the comments only, not your thoughts on crosby.

it wouldn't matter who milbury made those comments about. it was unprofessional. i'm not a fan of any of the announcers on that crew. olzcyk whines every game about being fired by the pens, like some one else said, milbury regularly inserts his foot into his mouth, and pierrre mcguire has no business near a hockey rink, since he is the only person on the planet that knows less about hockey than me.

Comments are also thoughts, and the whole incident revolved around Crosby's cheap shot antic's. Bring up controvresity on the forum and you'll get coments like it or not!! All in good fun that is.

Happened right after the whistle. Watch the replay, and yes it was a well deserve cheap shot. The whole point Milbury was making and he did it "inappropriately" I must say was Crosby didn't learn his lesson on giving cheap shots and will be concussed again and may not able to continue his Great NHL carrier. He's way to Great a player to continue his lowly antics. Mario needs to sit him down and give him a talking too, like he did with Matt Cook. The Great ones in Hockey's past, never acted like him, they alway's rose above this kind of play.

Sorry but not every hockey player takes cheap shots and not every game has them and yes they will alway's happen!! but what do I know lol

Great teams and Great player's rise above instigating like the Rangers have against Philly last night and the other last 7 games they played the Flyers. The Flyers have way to much talent to play that way. Instigating breaks "there" momentum against well disciplined teams and in the end works against them as it has. It just doesn't work against well disciplined hockey team's. Peter Laviolette know's this but continues to use this approch and in the end will get him fired like it has in the past. The difference in a good coach and a so so coach is that the good coach brings out the talent in his players.

But what do I know the more I think I know the less I really do, lol

Like the great "Labwrom" stated; Mild digging here and there in good taste, but nothing nasty at all, just a great group of fans.

I myself enjoy listening to the NBC Hockey Guy's, Dont always agree but think there very good compared to some crews. Alway enjoy Milbury's comments never know what he'll say as with JR's & Jonesy is usally spot on Brian E. & Eddie also. Pierrre well he's just another whole ball off wax, lol. Loved his play by play there between Lav and Granato "Hilarious"

Good Luck to all of you and your Teams this will be a great if not greatest Playoffs Ever.

James

For full disclosure I am a Wings fan, however as a hockey fan Sid The Kid is good for the game, and I hope his recovery is complete. Back with my Wings hat I love to hate him, and I wear my #66 "Cry Baby" tee shirt with pride. Again this is tempered by Chris Chelios who said "they only boo when you are still a threat"

Putting the hockey fan hat back on Sid has earned the Cry Baby title. If he truly wants to take the torch as "the next one" then he needs to loose that reputation. Hockey may still have to "change" (to what is the question) but the face of the game does not need to have a reputation as a cry baby.

Not worth a comment. But I'll say this, (oh no!!)
The NHL or should I say Bettman and Campbell have had it in for the NYR's owners (Dolan Family) for years its not a secret theres alot of history to back that up, just google it. But were not gonna be cry baby's about it or ever ask the NHL or anyone else (ie) NHL fans to bail (ticket prices) us out for mismanagement and bankruptcy (remember the two team bailouts), cause that just wont happen to the Rangers. The truth has been spoken about the Dirty Birds and the NHL hierarchy and their Favorites in the leauge.

As for how well the NYR do in the Playoffs we will have to see, won't we? For a team still in rebuilding and trying to find their way, not a bad finish from 8th to Frist in the Eastern Conference to second overall record in the NHL one year later. As for "True" NYR fan's we have never even expected a season finish like this. We expected a decient one in 2-3 years from last years finish. We true fans have to Commend the leadership of this Frist Rate "Original Six Organization" has shown from there Captain and the very few Veterans, all the way up to the Owners, but especially GM Glen Sather! finally getting it on how to build from within their own system which is said to be the best in the NHL.

From Late November to the Best Winter Classic Game so far, to their "Best in the East Finish" we true NYR fan's knew this was a special team and as it turns out a very dangerous team to play against.

I'm a Proud 47 year NYR fan and seen alot Ranger teams but this on is the most fun I have watched in all them long and I mean long years. There were more talented ones but this one is has been the most fun to watch. I guess because they have grown together as a true team and play like a team.

So I Thank the NEW YORK RANGERS for a Wonderful Year no matter where they finish in the Playoffs!!

Hears to you Ranger's!!! and Ranger fans (you other NHL fans too and are invited to watch also)

Putting the hockey fan hat back on Sid has earned the Cry Baby title. If he truly wants to take the torch as "the next one" then he needs to loose that reputation. Hockey may still have to "change" (to what is the question) but the face of the game does not need to have a reputation as a cry baby.
sid has changed. he never really whined, just talked too much to the refs. he has since realized that it's a waste of time and even said so recently. the fact that he still has that stigmata is, like you said, because he is still a threat. i don't think that there is ony one who would not want him on their team.

i always criticized him for hounding the refs too much, but then i started paying attention to other "c" and "a"' wearers and they were on the refs jock just as much. i kind of contribute this to "crosby's doing it, i better get my say in this too". now, it seems odd if someone don't complain about every call or missed call.

right around 3 ours to go until the puck drops in the burgh...playoff beard is 4 days old, neal jersey is on. no alcohol in the house except for some of my wife's wine coolers...wondering if i should drive to the distributor or just imbibe a tasty fruity girly cooler...decisions decisions...

enjoy some playoff hockey gents

St. Louis has a heck of a defense. they have more shutouts as a team than any other this year. they don't give up a lot of shots, but they also don't score a lot. that may make it tough for them in the playoffs.

If the blues play Phoenix in the first round it will be the most boring series ever played. They shouldn't even broadcast it. All you'll hear is turn over in the neutral zone and all the could do is chip the puck deep and change.

Just got home from watching the 'Yotes beat Columbus 2-0 on a 54 save shutout by Mike Smith, his third straight. Smitty is finding his groove at the right time, now the rest of the team needs to figure out how to score some goals. We need one more point, or Dallas to miss out on one point and we're in. We can still win the division, or miss the playoffs completely.

Crosby? - he's the "Jeff Gordon" of hockey. Instigates then whines. Either man up or back down, Cindy.

And I for one am looking forward to the Flyers/Pens 4 vs 5 matchup next week. It'll be one for the ages.

Can the Brooons repeat? The toughest trophy to win in back-to-back seasons and if the Canucks repeat winning the West - (they'll sail through Dallas/Phoenix/San Jose' in the first round) - I'll take that rematch any day!

I look for Nashburg to take out the Wings in the first round and go at least one more. As much as I hate them, they're looking like a contender. But you can never count out Detroit, they have a way of turing up the juice come playoff time.

Yeah, the next 10 weeks is the best time in sports!

Why not, throw all the stats out the window, a new season is starting, and anything can happen.

Last year, people said the Bruins didn't have a world class goalie, and the Bruins couldn't score on the power play. Boy did we fool everyone.

Wings have been shakey as of late but this the 21st year in a row to make the playoffs.
Lets not forget the setting home game win streak record this year!

It will be interesting and since I am now retired I can watch all the games!

Things are looking up for the Hawks
Thanks to NHL Center Ice I've seen all but 2 of their games this year. What a roller coaster ride!

Heck - We're upto 44/200 and The Regular Season hasn't ended yet...

While I'd REALLY like to see the BLACKHAWKS win it again - I sure hope the cup goes to one of The Original Six

A hockey coach walked into the locker room before a big game, looked over to his star player and said, "I'm not supposed to let you play since you failed math, but we really need you in there. So, what I have to do is ask you a math question, and if you get it right, you can play." The player agreed, so the coach looked into his eyes intently and asked "Okay, now concentrate hard and tell me the answer to this: What is two plus two?" The player thought for a moment and then answered, "4?" "Did you say 4?!" the coach exclaimed. Suddenly, all the other players on the team began screaming, "Come on coach, give him another chance!"
