What is your favorite John Wayne movie?
Lately, i've been watchin' a few Westerns when I have a moment of quiet.
I'd have to say, John Wayne has got to be one of my favorite actors of all time.
So, what is your favorite John Wayne movie, quote, excerpt, et cetera?

McQ (1974) in which Wayne plays a modern-day detective in Seattle. Most of it was filmed around Seattle. I particularly like it because Wayne is armed with a suppressed MAC-10 machine pistol in some scenes. An unusual weapon at the time, and doubly unusual to have it in John Wayne's hands.
The Shootist (1976). A fine film I enjoyed because it's not the stereotypical Wayne. The cast is great too: Lauren Bacall, Richard Boone, Ron Howard, Jimmy Stewart, Hugh O'Brian, Harry Morgan John Carradine and the woman who never knew she stole my heart when I was a teen: Sheree North (RIP Sheree).

Conservative humorist Florence King once defined a conservative movie as "any movie where John Wayne says 'we're going in' or 'we're moving out'."

While they're all great, it would have to be The Fighting Seabees.
Must have seen it at least a dozen times as as the TV station in Gulfport, MS (home of the Atlantic Fleet Seabee base) showed it regularly.

El Dorado. I know that Rio Bravo is basically the same movie, but James Caan's Mississippi makes the flick.

Is there a John Wayne movie that isn't my favorite?
Since you didn't limit it to westerns, I will say "The Quiet Man." Considering westerns only, I will say "The Shootist."
I was in a gun shop this afternoon, and one of the employees was actually wearing a John Wayne gold signature edition Vaquero in .45 Colt, blue, in a custom made gun belt. (We need a drooling icon...) He said he had had it for several years and had never fired it. Why in the heck he was carrying it was beyond me...but it's his gun and he can carry it if he wants to!

So many to choose from." Angel and the Badman," "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "The Quiet Man"," Rooster Cogburn", "The Shootist", "The Searchers," "True Grit." It's hard to pick just one.

My favorite is "They Were Expendable" My father, an Army veteran of WWII was discharged after the war but the Army came and got him and quarantined him with several other guys that tested positive for malaria. He was in the pacific theater and contracted the disease. The Army sent him to an island off Miami, Fla. He said they sat on the beach and watched while many of the scenes in that movie were filmed. I remeber him saying they watched with binoculars as the movie was filmed and often caught a glimpse of John Wayne. I remember he said that JW always had a cigarette in his mouth and they would sometimes stop shooting a scene just so the Duke could smoke one. In the end of the movie you can see a PT boat, cant remember if its coming in or going out btu the lighthouse in the scene is the Miami light.

We watched the War Wagon last night, and that's a good'un, but my favorite is The Shootist. There were so many great actors and actresses in there supporting John in his last film, how can you not like that? And Harry Morgans role as the sherriff is classic!

Rooster Cogburn, The Shootist and True Grit in that order. You can't beat the performance of John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn, they were a match made in heaven. But I must admit I like all of his movies.

Not necessarily my favorite, but often overlooked, "The Horse Soldiers," as much for William Holden's performance as Wayne's. "Ding dong, ding dong."

This is one of my favorite movies, but I have trouble thinking of it as a John Wayne film, because his was more of a supporting role to Robert Montgomery. Seems that way to me, anyway.
For what I think of as a "John Wayne" movie, I'd say Stagecoach is my favorite.
For an experience, check out Jet Pilot with the Duke and Janet Leigh. It's a hoot.

Rio Bravo has to be one of the quintessential John Wayne movies of all time. El Dorado is essentially a remake, and is nearly as good.

All of them but, if I have to choose...
"The Quiet Man" and "The Shootist" are my two favorites and it's hard to choose between these two.
I never tire of watching either.
Also, Lauren Bacall and Ron Howard were both excellent in "The Shootist"

The Shootist:
Wayne's best acting performance and a line to live your life by, “I won’t be wronged, I won’t be insulted, and I won’t be laid a hand on. I don’t do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.”
Rio Bravo:
One of the coolest men ever, Dean, one of the Hottest Babes, Angie and the classic Walter Brennan.

Mine would be "The Shootist."
Rather than just playing himself in stereotype, he addresses the entire human condition. That being, living the life he has created, mentoring, facing disappointment, a modern age he doesn't fully understand and his own mortality.
Yet, he does the right thing.

I've got too many favorites to pick just one, so I'll mention one that first came to mind, "Rio Bravo" (1959). It was the first in a trilogy of Howard Hawks John Wayne movies, which used the same basic script. The other two are "El Dorado" (1967) and "Rio Lobo" (1970).
These Hawks westerns relied more on character studies than plot. In addition to the Duke's excellent performance, Ricky Nelson, Dean Martin, Angie Dickinson, and Walter Brennan had memorable supporting roles. Fans even got to hear some crooning by Nelson and Martin!

The John Ford films that used the same bunch of character actors; Ben Johnson, Ward Bond, Harry Carey Jr., Victor McLaglen, Hank Worden. Wouldn't you have liked to be on location with that crew?

Another vote for "The Quiet Man". I'm a bit surprised to see it mentioned so many times, as it's rather against the norm for a John Wayne pic. A great movie, with one of the best screen fights ever, and some hilarious lines and/or images.
If we're talking westerns, I'd have to say "El Dorado". Some interesting characters, my favorite was "Bull" played by Arthur Hunnicutt. I saw this movie recently on T.H.I.S. TV, and was dismayed to see that, in what I can only assume was a nod to political correctness, the scene in which James Caan's character "Mississippi" dons a disguise and imitates a china-man was edited so that his imitation was deleted, and the scene no longer makes any sense.

I'm not as big a fan of The Searchers as most, but I readily admit it was a fine movie.
My favorite John Wayne movies seem to be the ones that also had Maureen O'Hara in them. That isn't a short list. If you really pushed me, I'd have to say The Quiet Man.
But the movie I quite liked that I haven't seen anyone else mention wasn't a western. The Sea Chase. The role was such a departure for Wayne. Throw in Lana Turner (yum!) and James Arness and that's a pretty decent trio around which to base a movie. Not to even mention Paul Fix, Tab Hunter and Claude Akins.
