Default Wine Experts....Advice Needed...

I just inherited a Mint Unopened "Stored Properly" ? Bottle of what I'm told is a very collectable Wine. It's a 1989 Marilyn Merlot.....If sources are correct, this wine sells for between $500 and $3000.....Does anyone know if this has a shade of truth to it? How can I find out? I may be looking at a new pistol at that kind of money....Thanks Guys.....Zebulon

"In Philadelphia it's worth fifty bucks." Like anything else it's what the market will bear. Look at recent wine auctions and see what it has sold for in the past. That would be the best indicator. Here's a link for an evaluation:

Yeah, give us some fresh wine, and put some of those little umbrellas in it too.

LOL....

Ever see Steve Martin in 'The Jerk' ? He's a country hick (Navin) who invents a gizmo and becomes a millionaire and takes his girl out to a fancy restaurant to impress her:

Waiter: "Would monsieur care for another bottle of Chateau Latour?"

Navin: "Ah yes, but no more 1966. Let's splurge! Bring us some fresh wine! The freshest you've got - this year! No more of this old stuff."

Waiter: "Oui monsieur."

Navin: "He doesn't realise he's dealing with sophisticated people here."

I'm pretty well versed in wine, but never heard of this item.
I clicked on the link and it has Marilyn Monroe on the label.

Who is the actual vintner?

Be very careful in buying expensive wines. Many have been improperly stored.

My son gave me a bottle of Chatau Latour that was bad. I was bitterly disappointed, as I'd been wanting to try Latour. I have drunk a number of other Classified Great Growths and been impressed.

He lost the receipt and as I recall, the store wouldn't exchange the bottle, so I kept the empty bottle and have it on a bookcase.

I used to work in a liquor store and can tell you that we got in a lot of crates of wine that had been delivered to the docks in Galveston and had evidently been left setting in the sun. Lots of "leakers" and bulged corks...

I was checking some sources and it looks like the prices are all over the board, depending on the condition of the bottle. I'd have it appraised by someone who knows wine, and sell it. You can get a heckuva bottle of scotch for 300 bucks!

The "bottles" are what you see in those brown paper bags, twisted at the top.

Thanks for the help guys.....I'm thinking the only value this stuff actually has is that which the "Sellers" ascribe to it. I'm not sure Wine available on EBay carries much clout, although the cheapest bottle I found there was "asking" $500......I'm not a Con-a-sewer, but I think it will bring a real $50 to the right bottle collector.....I'm thinking the wine is secondary......Looks like I'll have to save my money and buy my guns with cash like everyone else......Zeb

And if you're looking for good wines at a modest cost, check out Columbia Crest's chardonnay and Riesling and Vina Santa Carolina's cabernet sauvignon. Kendall-Jackson also has very good sauvignon blanc at about $8.99.

American wineries have some very good wines at reasonable cost. So do the better Australian wineries, but their chardonnay isn't what you'd expect from the grape, although it can be very good, as with Lindeman's Bin 65.

Most restaurants murder red wines in their infancy, serving them at 2-3 years old. Those bottles need a minimum of 4-5 years to develop right. And bars seldom realize or care that wine develops in contact with air, once the bottle is opened. They treat wine like whiskey.

cork or twist off top. twist off cap $3.99, cork maybe $ 6.99. Now if it come in a box in a tin foil bag I'll go $12.00. Red, is my favorite, but have been known to drink some white.

Looks like it's lost a 1/4th of its value in the last year. Down from $2K to $1.5k on avg.
