Was it Barney Fife with Andy Griffith or Chester Goode with Marshall Dillon? They both lost a number of prisoners and tripped over their boots a lot. I give the nod to Chester as the better of the two. Not the same type of show but alike in a lot of ways as far as the hired help goes.

Ill vote for Claude Akins assistant in: The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo with Mike Henry (in) Smokey and the Bandit--as a close second.

Barney and Chester may have been fools but they were loyal to the last. I saw a movie the other day, it was not very good as I can't even remember the name, but in the flick the guys partner betrayed him and shot him. I'll take a loyal bumbler over a traitor any day.

I'm sure that we'll see the usual Dragnet fans, but my favorites were shows like Tales of the Texas Rangers, Sheriff of Cochise, and U.S. Marshal. (John Bromfield was the sheriff who became the marshal.) I have no idea who the supporting deputies and Ranger were, but they were good. Think Harry Lauter, Jr. may have been Jace Pearson's fellow Ranger.

Not a cop show, but the shorter guy on Lives of the Bengal Lancers/77th Bengal Lancers? was good. I'd know the actors if I saw their names. Both were officers in a cavalry regiment in colonial India. I think Phil Carey played the tall guy. He was later Phillip Marlowe on a diferent series. Think the other guy was named Warren Something. Stevens?

Of current shows, Joe Mantegna is a standout as Supervisory Spcl. Agent David Rossi on, Criminal Minds. I like him as well or better than Thos. Gibson as SSA Aaron Hotchner. The female agents are also good, but three cast members are implausible and detract from the authenticity of the show.

I was a young kid when those early shows were on, but remember the actors pretty well. I can tell you the guns most used, too.

I vote for the partner I had who almost shot me in the face while I was disarming a drunk with a gun. Second place goes to the supervisor I had who almost gutshot me because he failed to properly clear his weapon. Hey, I think I just figured out why I preferred to work alone.

Festus, then Barney. Two different eras: Festus with his mule and Barney with his motorcycle.... Both entertaining sidekicks.
