Any doctors here? Jock itch medications?
Being that this is a family friendly forum and viewed by both males & females......I hope I'm not crossing any lines of decency by discussing this......so here goes...
I admit it. I suffer from severe jock itch. It can be unbearable at times. A hot (very hot) shower will relieve the itch for quite a while. After the shower I will douse myself with either baby powder or Gold Bond "medicated" powder......but then hours later the itch will flair up again.....not always severe....but sometimes. So that's my solution at home. I simply dive into the shower when an itch flairs up......but at work or out & about it is a different story. Any of you guys out there willing to admit you've had the same problem? I just bought a can of this stuff called Lotrimin powder spray and the stuff does not work much....what it does do is burn like #&^%! Can you recommend a good over the counter medication that actually works.......or any type of home remedy you've tried? I imagine the first bit of advice I'll get is probably the best of all.......go see a doctor.....but that is exactly what I don't want to do for obvious reasons:o Russ |
Several of my friends came home from Vietnam with Fungal infection, Their fathers came home from the Pacific theater of WWII with a similar condition. They all cleared this up with a hot bath with Clorox bleach added to the water. You'll need to open the window, because your eyes should water. Or if you wish, go see a real doctor for a co-pay and he will do tests for a co-pay and maybe send you to a specialist for a co-pay. This has worked in my life on funky feet syndrome also. We are talking a 30 minute soak. Good luck. Ivan

Usta could get Bevil's Lotion or Jim Wade's Foot Medicine. You needed to be near some open spaces to absorb the pain of use.

I think we have now officially covered every subject know to man.
|
...it's not jock itch:eek:
:p:):D |
Lotrimin Ultra worked for me. Apply it a few times a day for a week and you'll be good to go.
Lotrimin Ultra on walmart.com Also you might want to look into more loose fitting undergarments. |
I've been using DESENEX for years, generic name: miconazole-topical.
|
My advice would be to quit fooling around at Walgreens. Go see a dermatologist. My guess is he'll send you over to a compound pharmacy to get a mix of Nystatin cream solution.
|
My doctor told me about Tinacton (sp?) cream which worked very well for me, but @ $11. + per tube, it was a little pricey. (but worth it for the relief).
Being the cheapskate that I am, I checked "Equate Athlete's Foot" at China Mart (aka Wall Mart). It has the same active ingredient (1% Tolnaftate) and is under $3. per tube. Both work very well for me, so you can probably guess which one I use. Hope this works as well for you. Art |

Long ago i tried everything. Went to the dermatologist finally. He said it was these little tiny bugs. I used Quell and burned all the sheets, boiled all my clothes, and cancelled my membership at a particular gentleman's club.

Desenex works really well for heat rash.....don't know about jock itch.
Being a carpenter and working in hot, hot areas, I would develop a rash where the leg holes in briefs would rub me raw. Desenex cured it. After all, everyone uses it on newborns to prevent diaper rash. An apprentice who I was working with called me late at night. He was standing over a fan, letting the breeze blow against his nads. He said it was the only way he could find any relief until I suggested Desenex cuz that's what I've always used. He's still using it, 10 years later. |

The bacteria was the same (mine) as an athlete's foot infection. Even the pharmacy guy cracked a little smile when I asked for jock itch medicine. They can be so cruel. |

Zeasorb AF is the absolute best remedy. Relief is fast.

Rub some icy hot or Ben gay on it. Trust me.
You will forget about the jock itch in no time. |
The only thing I have found that works is Tenactin or its generic at Wal-mart. Comes in liquid spray or powered spray and both work.
It probably depends on the type fungal infection you have, but this one certainly works for me, and nothing else did. |
Hell, I had it so bad back in school that the rest of the locker room was taking bets to see which would reach my knees first- the crotch rot or the athletes foot. Cruex is what we used to use.

This thread is making me itchy.

hoppes#9 and 000 steel wool.

I had this once over in Chu Lai. A Navy coreman gave me a small bottle of liquid and told me to rub the solution on the afflicted area. I did and just about went thru the roof of the tent. Burned like crazy. Read the bottle instructions and it turned out that the solution was to be diluted something like 10 to 1. The fungus never came back. Haven't thought about that in years. That being said, see a Doctor. It's probably some type of fungus and it should be cured not just pacified.

If it turns out to be crabs instead, I heard the cure on one of those daytime talk shows!
Shave half of the effected area. Spray the other half with lighter fluid, light the lighter fluid. When the crabs run to the shaved area, stab them with an ice pick. The major difficulty with this solution is that ice picks are no longer common in the home. |
As a longtime sufferer, I think most of the remedies mentioned here would work, but as has been mentioned, you may have to go to your doctor for a prescription for the weapons-grade stuff.
But something that has not been mentioned is the importance of dry, seriously clean clothes. Wash underwear in hot water and bleach. Period. Change them as often as you can when they become damp with sweat. Don't do like I still have a tendency to do and wear that favorite pair of bluejeans for a week just because they are comfortable, even though you may not have worked or sweat in them. If you are like me and not fashion oriented, it may seem to make sense to wear the same shirt again, if it doesn't stink and isn't dirty. But if you get some of the fungus in your clothes from wearing them, you are only going back to square one. This goes for sweaters and jackets, too if you wear them too long. Regards and don't scratch, Bill s |

Use Tinactin made FOR JOCK ITCH
The bug (Tinea cruris) for jock itch is different from the athletes foot fungus so 'general' products may not do the job. Tinactin works for me. If you don't get satisfaction with that I would see a dermatologist.

Desenex and, later, Lidex ointment worked fairly well for my FEET. Not sure what they would do to family jewels, wouldn't even think about getting any on a more important member.
What ultimately worked for the feet was frequent exposure. Not so sure how your fellow parishioners will react to that in your case. Theoretically, a dermatologist would be the next step. Since I had my foot problem solved not by a dermatologist but by his assistant who had served with the Marines (not sure whether he was a corpsman or a marine), maybe you should keep reading replies here and hope for the best. |
Terpentine's cheaper

No matches needed, it will be a flameless BURN. |
Don't know if they still make it but I second Bevill's Lotion. It absolutely works as the acid eats away the affected skin. Worked well for me when I played football. T4L is about the same stuff but it may not be available either.

You need a bottle of rum, a good cigar, a live chicken, a Jobu statue, and on the night of a full moon you take off... Wait! I'll get banded for talking religion!:eek: See a doctor and do not lie about where it hurts.

Just realize, this will not be an overnight cure. It will take time. Also, the other recommendations to wear looser underwear & clothing are a must. |

I knew it would be here. One of my buddies in Viet Nam acquired the little creatures from a "social engagement" in the ville. We had heard that one already, so I made up a variant when I saw him sitting on his rack looking quite concerned- I had a 45 in my right hand while I handed him my Randall with my left. Told him to start stabbin em, and I'd shoot any he missed or only wounded. :D |
Old School
Paint em red.
Mercurochrome works if you can find some. Keep them dry for a few days and you're good as new except the color thing. Grandpa taught me that one summer when I got it. |
Well I'm sure that any number of remedies listed here would do the trick but, and all humor aside for the moment, what every you use you will be worlds more comfortable if you are now wearing jockey style briefs to switch at least for the duration of your problem to boxer shorts. Go ahead and ask me how I know........

If your skin is smooth and not cracked, blistered, peeling etc. you need a steroid cream. If it is cracked, blistered, peeling etc. you need an anti-fungal like Lotrimin.
|
the bug cure may be worse then the condition. have used white vinegar to help defeat a fungal affliction, wash the area well with soap and wash rinse well with a clean cloth, and bath the area with straight vinegar, any open areas will burn. do this 2-3 time per day. use a clean towel everyday, wear clean under roos daily and change after working all day. do this daily for about 10 days. what ever you use it will need to be done 2-3 times per day every day, missing a day allows the bacteria to grow back. clean clothes and towel are important so there is no reinfection. lose undies and pants help reduce the heat and sweat.

I wish to thank you all for your advice.
I am going to write down all the various brands of medication mentioned here........ I'll try each and every one of them until I find something that works. I'll consider the home remedies mentioned as well. As a very last resort I suppose I'll go see a doc, but honestly it is just too damn embarrassing. FWIW......I do not wear briefs......have not since childhood. I always wear loose-fitting boxers. As for personal hygiene well, what can I say? I'm a clean dude!:)..........I probably take too many showers.......sometimes 5 per day due to my itch. A few posters have mentioned things like "bugs" & "crabs". Yikes!! I honestly don't think it can be anything like that. Those type of afflictions can only come from bad hygiene correct? Again, thanks everyone... (Oh and Kamloops67...the "Hoppes 9 & steel wool" advice was funny but you know what? I may just try it:D) Russ |

Go see a dermatologist. If it's a fungal or bacterial infection, you need to treat it NOW! Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

....sharing info in the lounge is useful to us all.....a BIG positive I'd say.....and I appreciate every ones response. Even the jokes! Another thing is that this particular medical situation is extremely minor in nature in comparison to some other more serious issues posted at times. Russ |
The active ingredients in athletes foot & jock itch meds are the same. They have different labels but its the same stuff, buy the cheaper one.
When I came back from VN back in '67 I had a fungal foot infection (I think most everyone did) The dermatologist my regular Dr. sent me to said. "Try EVERY brand of over the counter meds you can find. If none of them work come back and I'll write you a perscripttion. But the prescription stuff generaly doesn't work any better, it just costs more." He was right. Most all of the over the counter sprays & creams made it quit itching. Finally salt water soaks (or maybe just time) made a permanent cure. |
If it is jock itch then might I suggest some Icy Hot and a fan. The itch will be gone, you will just feel like your credentials have been pepper sprayed. If it isn't jock itch, you know, the rash that won't wash off, then you better go see a doctor and stop doing some of your extra curricular activities. Worst case is that you go get a razor, shaving cream and then douse the area in turpentine. Itch solved.

Itch
In VN I seem to recall a blue powder for the foot rot problem ?

Aveeno anti itch lotion works for the itch relief, comes in a small bottle, don't get the anti itch cream, just the lotion, looks like calamine lotion. I've been fighting this for 60 years and no cure yet, mine's been so bad, I've got scars from it, been to the Dr's and got a script, and it helped for a while, but it came back. Another poster mentioned mercurochrome, haven't tried that but in HS the coach used Merthiolate on us and that helped for a while, thought it was cured, but it came back, don't think the present day formulation of Merthiolate is the same as 40 years ago olcop |
