Probably moving to Sheridan, Wyoming. Anything I ought know?

I drove through Wyoming from Denver on my way to the Sturgis Rally a few years back, and decided right then and there that Wyoming is #1 on my list of destinations when the time to move from PA is upon me. Six more years until my little Diva Shooter is out of school, then it's Westward Ho!

Find a few good recipes for cooking antelope outside on the grill. It is too smelly to cook inside. Antelope are regarded as varmints in Wyo. Get a couple of good small caliber prairie dog rifles and about 1,000 rounds of ammo for each. Best P Dog hunting in the West! .......... Big Cholla

I really like Pinedale. I camped out every fall in the area for years. Still have friends up in Boulder. The Wind River range is just beautiful. The Museum of the Mountain Man is not to be missed.

We'll take you in.

Sir, let me be the first to welcome you when you arrive. Folks like you are always welcome here. Maybe Iggy, Thom, Bat Guano, Wyo, Wingmaster, 4Js, Chop, hpfenning, myself and a few others will have a get together when you arrive.

And by the way... Marshwheeling....How is it you come to know about the secret called Spotted Horse?

One more little known attraction in Sheridan is King Ropes. I am not much of a cowboy, but if I am not mistaken, they are world renound for their ropes. They are also known for their leather work. Their is even a "King Style" of carving leather. They have a museum in the back of the rope shop (Right on Main street) that is definately worth the trip. Mostly saddles, leather, and a bunch of guns.

Welcome to Wyoming. I think you will like it here.

I found it all by myself, without any help from Esquire. Let's just say, if you get thirsty between Gillette and Sheridan, there aren't too many alternatives. Been stopping in there for years on motor bike trips.

One of my favorite Brushes With Fame involves Peter Fonda, who, back in 1991 or 1992, laid down his Fatboy going through there to avoid a deer that had come up out of the ditch. Shortly thereafter, like the next day, I was up at the Medicine Wheel just off US14A in the Big Horns on a post-Sturgis moto trip with my son and a friend. Fonda rode up, we struck up a conversation, and he told us about laying his bike down.

A few years later, my buddy told me I had to go see The Limey, with Terence Stamp and Peter Fonda. There is a scene where drug kingpin Peter Fonda is driving up the Coast Highway with his trophy girlfriend, and he tells her the story about the deer at Spotted Horse, just the way he told it to us at the Medicine Wheel. I guess he likes to tell the story almost as much as I do.

Yep, Spotted Horse is a thriving metropolitan area and cultural mecca ;) It's almost as uppity as Ucross. Don't blink or you'll miss both.

So far nobody has mentioned something that is bound to capture your attention besides the magnificent scenery: the wind. It often blows hard coming down off the Northern Great Plains, and 50-plus mph gusts of winds aren't uncommon. Summer thunderstorms can quickly build up over the Big Horns and deliver some awesome lightning and afternoon monsoon rains.

Sheridan has a college, and a great location. As a result, it has a bit more culture than some small towns in WY, and quite a bit of outdoor recreation to offer because of the Big Horn Mountains. You'll like it, but don't expect fresh seafood.

P.S. If you'd like to get the flavor of that part of the world, read a couple of Joe Pickett novels by local area author C.J. Box.

Man, you fellas got me wantin' to make the move!

Gator, you've come a long way from Lansing. And I see ya got that basketball team! Five?! God bless. Wow!

(Following your adventures has been one of the most entertaining, and truly moving, experiences on the forum.):)

Awww, Ranger is makin' too big a deal outta the wind in Wyoming.

It ain't that bad. Once in a while the wind quits and we all fall down from walkin' at a 45 degree angle, but there ain't no pollution.:D

BTW, it snowed in Cheyenne last night. Grass is white, the streets and roads are clear. It'll be gone by 9 AM. Just a cool spring shower that won't run off.

DO NOT:
1. violate the speed limit (Iggy is a State Trooper)
2. rustler cattle (Iggy is a rancher/cowboy)
3.cause a disturbance (Mrs. Iggy is a Deputy Sheriff)
4. don't get thirsty (there an't no water)
5. don't take off your "Long Johns". ( Summer is on July 23 from 1pm to 4pm)
6. I you want to trade guns Iggy and Tom Braxson are available.
7. If you observe flashing blue lights in your rear view--In Wyoming this means you are driving too slow, so drive faster, much faster.
8. DO NOT wear PINK (don't ask me why)
9. If asked, your handgun grips are ivory, NOT pearl
10. don't ride a horse named tornado.
GOOD LUCK!

Numbers 1 & 3 is pretty much history. That was 35 years ago.
#7 Maybe not a good idea. ;)

The rest of them is purty good advice.:D

Ucross is where Craig Johnson lives, author of the Walt Longmire novels. (Any town that has the same name as a foundation is bound to be uppity.) It's a wonder that Walt Longmire and Joe Pickett have never crossed paths.

I have had some wonderful adventures in the Big Horns, and I don't even hunt or fish. The riding and the scenery are enough for me. The view down Shell Canyon is typical, but by no means unique:

AND, you will be close to Cody, WY and the Buffalo Bill Museum. You and your kids will spend a lot of time in that museum. Anytime I get close to that area, I plan on a day at the museum. The firearms collection is not to be believed. I discovered by looking at an actual deer hide suit of Buffalo Bill's that he wore for the wild west show that he wasn't a very big man. .............. Big Cholla

My grandmother knew him when she was a little girl, and she thought he was a very big blowhard!

If I am not mistaken, according to the city limit sign, the population of Spotted Horse Wyoming is 2.

One other thing about this area is The Black Hills. I live about half way between the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills. Most of the Black Hills is in South Dakota. Really nice place. The Big Horns is a really nice place too, but they are very different. I go to each place for totally different reasons.

IIRC (?) I think (?) I visited a Buffalo Bill Museum outside Denver years ago.
Several firearms were mis-labeled.
